I am about to join in the adventure of Flat Towing.
Question..... The Vehicle I will be towing is an Auto Suzuki Grand Vitara.... the owners manual states that you place the gear in Parked position and 4x4 in Neutral.
- it seams strange to leave the gear in park and not Drive.
We tow a grand Vitara Auto with no problems. Its the transfer case that you are putting in Neutral which disconnects the wheels from the gearbox. You put the gearbox in Park to prevent it turning. You must also put the ignition key on accessories to ensure that the steering is free to turn (we had a key cut for this purpose which will work the steering lock but wont start the car). Turn off the radio so as not to flatten the battery.
Don't forget to stop every 300k and run the car in gear (transfer case still in neutral) this ensures that it remains lubricated.
The Suzuki tows like a dream and we hardly know ours is there.
Enjoy

We flat tow a Grand Vitara. We put the 4 wheel drive gears into neutral. Then we put the ordinary gear into 2nd. & turn the key to accessories. We have successfully towed this way for 6 years.
