The wonderfull slow cooker


I did a search, maybe I stuffed it up but there was bugger all about slow cookers.

SHE WHO MUST BE OBEYED and I sing the praises of our slow cooker where ever we travel. We head out for the day fishing, bushwalking or just haven a sticky. We arrive back to base and our friend has the main part of our evening meal prepared.

With a little rice or just some crusty bread we can head to happy hour knowing our culinary obligations have been taken care of and we are fee to enjoy the company without worrying about, WHATS FOR DINNER?

We cook all our corned meat in it, be careful, it may fall to pieces as you try to get it out. Rabbit, roo, and other, less desired cuts of meat we're given ago and they have all came out tender and juicy.

Of cause some cuts and indeed some more temperamental types of meat need a little care and you cant just take off for the whole day and let them tend for them selfs.

We travelled through QLD and I keep seeing these lamb necks for sale, there were in all the supermarkets.

Now I know Ive lead a very sheltered live, but WFT do you do with these cutlets of lamb neck, theres not much meat and I could see no reason for the price they we're asking per KG.

We arrive Home a couple of weeks ago and I was in the local supermarket and the butcher was putting out some lamb along with necks, I asked him what they were used for and he said they were like a ox tail, if used in a casserole the flavour was outstanding but you may need a few chops to provide some extra meat to the dish.

Well, yesteday my bargain hunting girl had picked up a tray of necks and a tray of forequarter chops at a very reasonable price. Through them in the cooker yesterday morning with some packeted casserole ingredients, that Im sure we had before.

But when we came back from shopping in late afternoon the smell was wonderful and the meal that followed, if your a lover of lamb, was unbelievable.

I was told by my soul mate, that 2nds were more than enough and as I wright I can smell the leftover being slowly heating for our dinner tonight and I reflect on her wise words.

 

I digress, and would like to return to my original thought.

Do you travel WITHOUT a slow cooker? If so, please reconsider

Bernieb, is your slow cooker one that needs to be connected to electricity, or is it a heat holding insulated pot that cooks as you travel? alhilda

Hello Bernie - I always loved my Mum's neck chop stew. As I have access to our own meat now always cook the neck the same. Put in casserole dish with onion, carrot, dash of curry powder and dash of vege stock and cook for a couple of hours - yum! yum!

 No Alhida

Its just the crock pot type, electric, stoneware insert slow cooker. With a simple high and low setting on the switch, so you can't cooking while you travel but when your day tripping from a home base, thats when we find unbeatable

Love our slow cooker. Have a large one at home and bought a smaller one for the van.

Slow cookers are too big a weight for our little van but I do have a thermal pot and it does much the same job. Have used it often in the same manner as a slow cooker. Corned silverside is delicious in it.

I share the enthusiasm for slow cookers. Wife does not. No problem: more for me! Somewhere I have a recipe for corned silverside slow cooked in Guinness. When I find it I will (a) try it and (b) post it here.
