lightning ridge caravan parks

Hi. I will be visiting Lightning Ridge week after next and staying 4-7 days. Wife, daughter and 3 primary school age grandchildren.

I am hoping someone may suggest an affordable park in town. Preferably walking distance to shops, pub, club etc, just so that the wife can walk home........

And, if you happen to know the current mining area, The Grawin, Sheepyards and / or Glengarry, I would be most interested in getting a "street" map of the area.

It is a most formidable area, and one in which one could easily get lost. And "Satnav" doesn't know her way around the area at all.

Cheers to all. KB

The Opel is the best but a bit down the road opposite bore baths. Crocodile park is good but small and close to town. Council park is in town but I got bogged in there once. Caravan Park behind hotel is ok, Not my choice. You can get maps at all parks. Garwin and Glengar are bit west but worth while drive. Enjoy Agro...

Hi KB,we always stay at the Opal C/P,one of the best parks in australia, but not an easy walking distance from the shopping centre. The price this year was for 2 adults $30 with top tourist discount.
When arriving in town go to the info centre and check out the discount coupon that costs $10,which gives lots of discounts at the towns sight seeings plus caravan park discounts.(It has been a few years since we have bought one so i hope they are still available).
Lightning Ridge is a great town to visit with LOTS of things to do and see.
Sorry cant give any info on the out of town except to say I think the pub is on a very rough road after the floods recently(2012???)
Have a great trip and have a great time with the kids.

cheers Baz

to be honest I didn't think much of Lightening Ridge... bastard of a road up to there... it will shake your van to bits.. .

about 5 kilometres out from the turnoff to LR theres a massive rest area where caravaners stay that's free...

watch out for roos early and evening..

Hi, We stayed at Crocodile and it was a friendly place. Easy to walk into town. They have a great happy hour there. However, we will be there in a few days and want to stay at the Opal and just walk across the road to the thermal pool. It looks very nice. Cheers Margaret

I'll also vote for the Opal. Terrific park. One of the best i have visited.

Wife and I were staying there when approached by a film crew and got to star in a Japanese TV documentary. The TV crew followed us around for a few days filming for a doco on the Aussie Grey Nomad. It was a hoot.

The producer sent us a copy of the show that was on Japanese TV last March. I never knew I could speak fluent Japanese.

We too stayed at the Crocodile C/Pk, yes it is small, but very friendly people, and as others have said, close in town.

The only caution we would say, watch the cattle grids coming from the north - they sure can shake you to pieces and it was the last one, that shattered a few things AND knocked the lid off my laundry powder container. Took me an hour and a half to clean up the mess in the cupboard, and trust me, Pete is a cautious driver - no flying over those things for him!

Opal CP is the "ONLY" place yes a bit out of town but the most modern friendly place you wont be disappointed has the best amenities you'll ever see in an outback CP.

I live quite some time now at Lorne Caravan Park, at Lorne Station, some 5 km out of town, with about 3,5 km by dirt road... It isn't exactly easy walking distance, but it is cheapest around, great amenities, although a bit rustic it is a reat fun for kids, as kangaroos and sometime emus come around. Plenty of room. It ia a most spacious caravan place in LR.  $10 a night for unpowered with discounts for longer stay, and %25 a night for powered sites, also discounted for longer stays. Very friendly and helpful Administrators, Christine and Alan. Opal is near a hot water baths, called here a Bore Baths, the water has some healing qualities for reumatic type desises, so it is VERY popular...  Bore Baths and Opal Caravn Park are situated a bit over 2 km walk to the town with about 250 m walk to borebaths. . So it isn't exactly an easy walk either. Cost is - $30 to $38 a night - depending of the season. Lightning Ridge is a great place too spend a good time for anyone. I decided myself to stay here and make my base here. There is 70 km to Growin Opal Fields, that are actually fully working mines. Highly recomended to visit if one wishies to see how the Opal Mining looks like, and how it looked in olden days. Great experience, great and quite cheap plates. Opportunity to acquirre Opal at the cheap prices at the weekly Sunday markets at Lightning Ridge.
