Ex Ambulance wiring dilemma


Hi Guys. Well I got my ex ambo sprinter a month ago, and had the shelves taken off. But the wires were left hanging down in drapes!!!

Ive got a great guy whos going to convert the van for me beginning of december (Sigh why does EVERYTHING take so long?)- Craig at Aurora Conversions in Hallam, But the wiring is such a pain. Does anyone know of someone who knows about ex ambulances and can remove the wiring?

An auto electrician or a Licensed Electrical Contractor would be able to assist you. Normally these people that do motorhome fitouts have an electrician. Start by asking the guy at Aurora Conversions.

My Troopy is an ex-ambulance. It still had all the gear inside such as fibreglass cupboards, seat in back roof rack on top etc, and all the associated wiring. I removed the wiring myself and it was basically a pruning excercise in clipping off where it had been attached to the OEM wiring harnesses, and carefully and securely taping over where the joints had been made. The extra wiring is usually heavier than original OEM wiring and is generally soldered into the OEM harnesses. One point to note is where it has been routed to the outside of the vehicle for lights and siren etc, through nylon gland nuts, you need to remove the gland nuts and get the holes repaired by a good body repair place. In mine there was no sealing of the bare metal where the glands had been fitted and rust had started to form around them.

Mine still had the little locker under the rear dickie seat marked "body bags"

Nice to hear from another Sprinter fan, Troopy. Understood it all right up to the gland nuts I think they are the connection inside the engine that Ive seen? Great thick tube. Craig (Aurora Conversions) was great he took me through the wiring and Im sure he will be able to do it. I just wanted to speed things up a little. But I think Ill leave it alone as I dont have the mechanical expertise to do it. Instead Ill just amuse myself with removing some of the stuff I can do. Cheers di

My ex-ambulance isn't a Sprinter sorry didi, it's a Toyota Landcruiser Troop Carrier. The Nylon Gland Nut looks like this:

and is used to pass cables through panels. For example, through the roof to the roof rack electrics.

If you go to the Sprinter Source forum and post in the Australian section, there is a chap in Melbourne who removes the wiring on a lot of ex ambos. If you post he may answer. I'm not sure where you are.

My guess is that most of the wires you speak about are 12v for lights etc., if it was me I would be leaving them there and working out how they are controlled and from where.. then i would be building the furniture around them and deciding then which ones i wanted to keep and which ones I wanted to pull out/cut off..

Also good to think about Bob. However, most of mine was a bit of a rat's nest and it was just easier to start again from scratch. But then again, I wasn't converting mine to a campervan either, so it was easier to just run what i needed to. Also some of the connections were a bit on the dodgy side lol.
