As some of you know we are buying another car. what sort is a mystery. we could do with some help. there is a Nissan navara rx d40 near us for sale. it is 4x4, 2.5l (2488cc), 4 cyl. turbo, 2009 and can tow 3,000. if we buy the caravan we like it will be 2,500 + our things. If the van and inclusions are on the 3,000 limit how do you think this car will perform. say going up a hill at Maleny. Qld. or should be give this a miss and go for a bigger car. it's a dilemma and one I will be glad to see the back end of when we choose a car. thanks everyone. be lost without you.
i have a Nissan navara 6 speed and tow a 16ft expanda
i have done the back of the Nissan up with a draw and a fridge slide and compartments
once both are loaded it sits down a bit in the back end but it tows great
most of the times I wouldn't know that it was there
i have just come of eBay after looking for something that I can lift the back up a inch or two
just to level it out . I would like to get it installed with in the next two weeks as we are heading off to Lighting Ridge at the end of the month for three weeks, so it would be good to have it for then
just one quick thing about the Navara don't let your Misses fill it with ULP as it will end up sitting at the Nissan dealer in Ballarat waiting to get repaired . Her excuse is that she has chemo brain at the moment ( last two weeks of it for her ) so here's hoping it's not to bad
We have a 2011 Nissian Navara 2.5 turbo diesel and tow our 24 ft caravan. We have upgraded springs on ute and added gas shocks, been on the road since November 2013 and had no trouble. Our trip included a trip up to Victoria's. High Country through Batlow. Caravan weight is 2400. Hope this helps.
My son's Nissan Navara 3lt turbo diesel blew number 3 piston the other week 30k outside of Pt Augusta on a cool day and towing a standard camper trailer. He had it towed to a local garage $550) and the mechanic had 2 other Navara's in the workshop with similar blown motors and said he made a good living out of Navara's. Quote was $12,000 to rebuild however son settled for a minor rebuild to get him home to Adelaide which came to $5,500 and then traded the vehicle in for a new Colorado at a huge loss.
The Navara was always serviced on time, mileage was aprox 220,000 and mechanically in good order according to his service agent. The Pt Augusta mechanic said Navaro's number 3 piston are prone to overheating from the exhaust gasses and not related to issues with the cooling system. Beware of second hand units is my view
The 3.0L Nissan Diesel motor is a known hand grenade and should be avoided for towing use.
The 2.5L motor has a lower power output, but if you can live with that, it is a much more reliable motor.

Hi Jim, not personal experience, but 2 close work mates both had engine failures at less than 100k.
Melted pistons because exhaust gas temperatures got too high towing boats up mountains into the lakes.
Both vehicles were repaired and traded in on other brands.
Both guys were tradesmen and researched the problems when they occurred.
I know it is only an example of 2, but it is also a 100% failure rate.
