There was a report, and interview with local SES, regarding Greens Lake and its closure from 29 Dec to 01 Jan 15 on the main ABC radio news. (7.45am today)
I am searching for a web-link to the story and will post it when (or if) I locate it.
The authorities have apparently taken the action due to the activities at Greens Lake for the past five years that have meant the need to have emergency crews on standby due to unruly behaviour, fireworks and violence. The authorities are no longer willing to have resources on stand-by during this period just to wait until something very serious occurs.
It was stated at least twice during the interview that Greens Lake will closed on 29 Dec and will not opened until 1 Jan - the words were not actually spoken that there would be "no camping" during that period, but it was stated that "the Lake will not be available during that time".
I am unable to be at Greens for that period, but I do appreciate the aura Greens holds to those on the forum. I think perhaps those who are planing the upcoming Schoolies for Seniors from Nov onwards - and re-living wonderful NYE's of times past - should perhaps make some contact with local authorities, either through any locals they may know, or this info as posted earlier -

[edit: I have been trawling the internet trying to find anything authoritative to confirm, or elaborate on, the Greens NYE situation. No luck - people have "heard about the closure" but not how "official" the closure is, or will be. Rochester, Elmore & Stanhope police stations are unmanned and the recorded message refers the caller to Echuca. Echuca police (at least the officer who answered the phone) had not heard if the closure had been confirmed.
So I have sent an email to Goulburn Murray Water who are responsible for the Greens Lake apparently.
I often camp at Greens Lake Rec Reserve. I have heard that Greens will be closed over the coming Xmas-New Year period. I have not been able to confirm this. However, I heard an item on ABC Radio news this morning that Greens would be closed 29 Dec > 01 Jan 15. Is this so? and if so, if I am camping there prior to 29 Dec will I be able to remain until mid-Jan (through the "closed" period). If this is not within GMW authority, could you please direct me to someone who may know.]
Cheers - John

Hi all I got this email today confirming closure of greens
September 9, 2014
Greens Lake to close New Years Eve
Greens Lake at Corop will be closed for New Years Eve at the request of the regions
emergency services who have raised serious safety concerns.
Goulburn-Murray Water (GMW) Head of Customer Service Geoff Enever said the water
corporation made the decision based on strong advice from the regions police and the Corop
Fire Brigade.
This is not a decision that has been made lightly, but the concerns raised with us by local
emergency services and community members cannot be ignored, Mr Enever said.
We feel the risk is so serious, closing Greens Lake over New Years Eve is the best option.
Police have told us last New Years Eve a Kyabram teenager was injured in a glassing incident
and the year before an unlicensed bar was detected selling alcohol to underage drinkers and
another serious assault occurred.
They fear a tragedy could occur and we feel we cant ignore this very real safety risk.
The lake will be closed for three nights from December 29 and will reopen at noon on January 1
to ensure people can enjoy it during the holiday period.
Stanhope Police Leading Senior Constable Bob Naismith said more than 400 people attended
Greens Lake last New Years Eve.
I honestly believe there is a very real chance a tragedy will occur, Ldg Sen Const Naismith
said.
"I've often sat back and wondered how we have been lucky that up to this date a tragedy has not
occurred bearing in mind the mass of water at this location.
Were not doing this to be party poopers, were doing this to save lives.Corop Fire Brigade captain Darren Bloomfield said illegal fireworks were common during the
New Years Eve festivities.
This is during the peak of summer and last year New Years Day was a total fire ban day, Mr
Bloomfield said.
There is a huge risk of a serious fire starting because of these illegal fireworks.
For the last five years weve stayed at home on New Years Eve just waiting for the phone call.
He said the impact was felt further afield than just in Corop with neighboring brigade such at
Stanhope, Colbinabbin and Corop West also on call.
His concerns were echoed by Corop Community Action Group President Clem Furphy who said
the decision to close the lake during New Years Eve was supported by the group.
We see this as a way of ensuring no catastrophe occurs on New Years Eve and that the
camping area is properly managed so it remains open during the rest of the year for everyone to
enjoy, Mr Furphy said.
