RE: Advice for a novice - Please!

Hi Phil

Ex 23 Intake Apprentice (yep - a Sprog) Airframe Fitter here mate - 20 years - mostly on Mirages - almost 11 years - at Williamtown and Butterworth. I came home with the last Mirages with 79Sqn from Butterworth in 88. If you were an aircraft eleco I'd probably know a few of the same people.

My van will have 2 x 100 watt solar panels - I could ask if they can be upgraded but that'd probably mean a bigger inverter so I'll suck it and see.

All your information helps if not confuses an old framie! :)

I've done away with the over but stuck with the gas cooktop and grill. There is of course the obligatory microwave oven.

I've started to look for a 12 volt Nespresso - we too love a our good coffee and have been spoilt by Nespresso - had to swallow the old 43 beans these days! :)

You say every 4th day to charge the batteries. A) don't the 2 x 150 watt panels do that or B) don't you have an Anderson system plugged into the ute?

If we unhitch anywhere I'll be double chaining the wheels with induction hardened 10mm chain and bolt cutter proof locks but if they want it bad enough, they'll take it. If you can show proof of trailer restraint, i.e., a photo, the insurance company will pay out and this was proved earlier this year when some low life stole my boat whilst we in Thailand!

Like my friend Pauline (name dropping :) ) said - Please explain? WTF is an induction cook plate? Is that something you can buy as a stand alone unit?

Great idea about the drinking water. Will copy that. I also have a rail mounted 60 ltr ARB fridge/freezer in the unit.

Cheers mate

Gday sprog.. (if I may.. just call me thick) 23 apps was around wagga when I was there I recon. 69, 70, 72, 73?

Have a look at the grey nomad website for a bit i wrote on induction cooking. Bloody brilliant (the cooking not the article).

Simply the hotplate doesnt get hot, uses electromagnetism to heat the pot (yes you need special pots) very smart way of cooking.

If you are anything like me you go over the top with safety and security be careful what you take and what you leave behind. We have a system that anything we use we put a texta (felt pen) mark on it. At the end of 6 months all the unmarked stuff goes to board of survey... But NO RPV!

I use a nespresso as well, if im in the bush its on the inverter, or I use the little one cup perculator on flame, mostly butane which is dead easy to pack and unpack when on the move.

Take care mate, I recon we ex military types are a large number here, Ive caught up with a lot of Air Force blokes, a few anchor clankers and a pongo or two.. (sorry guys, couldnt resist). Im looking forward to catching up mate, Im near Milang in South Oz ATM.
Cheers

Yes spot on Phil, we (23 Intake) were there from Jan 69 to June 71.

I don't get started on the road until late in the year though probably early next year. We will make a bit of trip on the way back from Old Reynella when we pick the van up.

I'll post when I get on the road and who knows, we might hook up for a coldie or two!

Cheers - Keith

You bet ya airframe butt mate, looking forward to that. You would know an old clockwinder mate of mine Kerry Aronie, took him flying in a light aircraft and made him puke.. 10 outta 10 he made it to the sick bag.
