New free camp spot..Kwolyin WA in the news..

Hope you enjoy this reuse of an old Ghost town area..

Over a period of months the free camp with separate camping and caravan sites has been carved out of the bush that had, over the years, reclaimed the sports ground, including oval, tennis courts and a golf course, that had once served the tiny town of Kwolyin, 7km west of Shackleton in Bruce Rock Shire.

Free Camp

great place. Had it all to myself last year and loved it. Such good facilities and lots of private caravan spots. I hadn't realised that camping at the rock was not permitted after dragging the van out there so this camp is perfect.

We stayed there this year when visiting Kokerbin Rock. The facilities are fabulous with flushing toilets, free bbqs and camp kitchen with free 4 burner gas cook top. The only things missing besides power were the bouncing pillow, swimming pool and tennis courts etc. A great council initiative since camping at the rock has been banned.

I left there yesterday after 4 days of totally chilling out. Excellent grounds and facilities. Well spaced out parking spots. Toilets, kitchen, BBQ and well set up open fires spots. They've done a great job.

For Kwolyin rock campsite, looking at the map there are two ways in, one on a bush track that goes past Kokerbin rock but a bit further down the main bitumen road between Quairading and Bruce Rock there is a bitumen road turn off that goes past Kwolyin, is that the best turn off and is the Kwolyin turn off clearly marked on the intersection sign etc confuse

I have been into Kokerbin Rock before but not further than that, but would prefer the bitumen option to Kwolyin.

I went into the camp from Bruce Rock Vic. Nice easy sealed road and the camp starts about 100 metres in and goes back a fair way. Coming from Kokerbin Rock is 9 ks of dirt road, very firm and easy to drive. Not very well signposted. If I hadn't gone in to KR that way I am sure I would have got lost get back out that way as there is a lot of side roads not signposted. You have to take one of those side roads to get back up to Kwolyin.

Thanks Marj,

I may head there for a few days next week about Monday or Tuesday before the weather warms up too much.

Many flies and mozzies around ?

PS:  My brother just sold his house in Bruce Rock, one of my grandfathers had a farm there many years ago, owned by others now.  Nice CP in town with great campers kitchen and was around $25 a night powered when I was there last.

Lots of blowflies Vic, but that could have been because the rubbish bins hadn't been emptied over the weekend. Yes a few mozzies..
In Bruce Rock I stayed at the sportsground for $5, no facilities but I don't need them anyway, fully self contained.

Thanks Marj,

That sports ground sounds good at Bruce Rock, who do you see for that?

I knew they open it for the Vietnam Vets Reunion each year but didn't know it was open all year round.

Last year I visited a free camp east of Corrigin but the flies were that bad you couldn't see out of your fly net they were so thick and if you opened a car door you ended up with a swarm inside.   I decided to move on.   Nice fresh water tank there though and a dam (old town swimming pool) near the camp spot.   It is shown in the Camps Book.

You go to the Shire Offices, pay 5.00 and they give you a permit to put on your dash.

Thanks Marj, I assume you could only do that during business hours Monday to Friday, so what happens if you rock up on a weekend or after hours?

I wondered that too Vic. Maybe get it for free or pay the next day if still there.

Thanks for the head up on that Marj, I'll check that out next time I am there, I've only stayed at the council CP in town (right behind the swimming pool) which is excellent.

I will be gong to Kwolyin next week hopefully for a couple of days and then maybe Bruce Rock, will have to wait and see.

Just spent a couple of days at Kwolyin, town water supply, campers kitchen with gas stove and sink and a tap connection at the rear for filling water tanks etc.   Modern flush toilets (septic) male, female and disabled.  No showers (but free hot shower at Quairading town rest stop toilet block) or dump point, dump point at Quairading or Bruce Rock.

Dogs allowed, fires out of bushfire season (starts 1st October). Had a nice fire going where I was camped up, tractor rim fireplace built by the Men's shed at Bruce Rock.  Some miscellaneous shots of Kwolyin.

PS: On the way home stayed one night at Meckering free overnight camp right in town, toilets available.

Great spot, just had 3 days out there, flys were a bit thick, but they were everywhere right thru' to Merredin. Great place to base from and view surrounding are attractions, Kokerbin rock also has flush toilets and bbq, 7 k's into Shackleton for supplies if needed, (store doesn't open on Sundays though).

Glad you had a good stay there Jon, thanks for the tip on the store, I did go there but during the week.

Hope you didn't swallow too many flies wink smile
