Dial before you dig

    DIAL BEFORE YOU DIG..

THIS IS THE RESULT OF A Camper USING A POST-HOLE DIGGER for a long drop  WITHOUT
CALLING FIRST FOR "LOCATES".

HE HIT AN UNDERGROUND, HIGH-PRESSURE CROSS COUNTRY GAS PIPE.
THEY NEVER FOUND HIM.
THE BLAST TOOK OUT 2 NEARBY HOMES.

Dial before you dig...

Be careful out there...

G.

www.hoax-slayer.com/dial-before-you-dig-explosion.shtml

"The photographs are genuine and do show the results of a gas pipe explosion but this explosion was not caused by a post hole digger, backhoe or any other excavator and nobody was killed in the incident.

In fact, the explosion was caused by corrosion in the pipe and was not the result of any excavation work."

"Five people were injured and two homes were destroyed in the blast."

You've gotta wonder what sort of curry the users of the pipe must have been eating.

Yeh well they operate at about 3,000psi if I recall. Then when going from liquid in pipe to gas n the air it expands by a huge factor. (200:1 for LPG in van so this would be astronomical)

I went to work it out for 3000psi at flow rate of say 1000gpm to see the volume of gas ---gave up too complex,, any experts out there???

Dial before you dig may seem like a great idea and it is to cover your a$$ but invariably the telephone line is nowhere near where it should be. Ours was one spade under the surface about 20ft from where it should have been.
When the PMG laid lines they probably were pretty exact but now private contractors do the work and are rarely checked.
Good Luck.
