Any Suggestion re Coaster Motor

We have just had the 2nd motor in the Coaster fail. First one was due to hitting a Kangaroo and the 2nd one has just failed. It was bought as a used engine that was reconditioned 30k ago and failed after 2k.

No 1 exhaust valve seat has collapsed and the metal destroyed the piston and liner on a 3B diesel. No warranty with it so our loss.

I have looked into getting an Engine change done by a Mob at Moree who do V6 Commodore motor conversions but want 10.5k to do it and we cannot justify that as it is too much.

A Mechanic down the road is prepared to do a recon of existing engine but his hoist is not rated to the weight of the Bus, So he cannot lift it.

He has a pit out the back and that would be the ideal way to drop it out but he hasn't got any pit jacks to remove it, Not sure if an engine crane would work over a pit with a Coaster.

Does anyone have a knowledge of how is best and easiest to remove the engine and apart from reconditioning existing engine which we estimate could end up at about 6k. One question can the liners be pulled out and replaced in the Bus.

Or does someone know of a shop who do a drive in drive out engine change at a reasonable cost, Maybe 10.5k is reasonable but we cannot afford it.

It has been a disaster from day one and looking for options, Yes we hit the Kangaroo on the way home from buying it.

IF you have access to a Pit..

I seen them drop the motors out by removing the drivers seat and accessing the top of the motor with a lower it on to a set of boards crossing the pit[using a portable motor crane]..
- and then push the bus out of the way..

The issue of the linear not sure..

A repco or similar reconditioned motor is one way you could go as they have a warrentee. They also fit motors, and have a good name.Second hand ones can be a problem unless you can guarantee the history. Bill

Bill I have heard that Repco use Hm gem motors and I have heard nothing but horror stories about them, Even our local mechanics who have used them in the past have horror stories.

I used to get a lot of machining done at Repco machine shop at Hamilton (Newcastle) years ago and built many a red Holden motor and only once did I have a problem with what they did, But from what I have read about HM Gem I wouldn't touch them now.

I fitted a HM gem motor into my mates UC Torana  mid 80's it was a xui clone and it hadn't done many k's when it blew out the welch plugs, That seems to be happening today with their engines so they haven't learnt from it. Also the old plugs were in the block.

I do thank you for the suggestion though

Cheers Allan

Juergen, I've heard of them dropping the engine out that way, We have a Bus company just around the corner and one of the gents is the Mechanic who has done Coasters and I'm trying to get hold of him to get info re what you said with pit. Cheers Allan

It was just a suggestion, but perhaps Repco replacements have gone down hill over the years.I domy own work, but then again I have stuck to Hiluxs and similar, and the present Courier has only done 140k, So I am touching wood.Sorry to hear about your predicament. Bill

Bought my SWB BB21 3B engine Coaster after the backpacker owners decided to drive it through a floodway, shortened two con rods about half way through the crossing.
Trucked it to Port Hedland from Wyndam & did the engine rebuild insitu, head & sump off & rebuilt in place.
Needed to put the front on stands as i has trouble getting my belly under there but otherwise was very straight forward.
