Not sure about free/alternative camps Pauline but the Apex CVP down steam a little is a little gem. Paddle Steamer turns around right in front of you.

There are a bunch of free camps all along the Murray but the APEX park Doug mentioned is awesome.
It's pet friendly and is in a stunning setting. My personal favourite..

The Top4 is so for kids like a pathetic old Disneyland.. Geez did I say that out loud?

Cheers.

Try the pumps at Phsyc bend. not sure of the spelling, between mildura and red cliffs. Red Cliffs club do very good meals if you are of a mind to eat out

We left Morgan today and passed thru Mildura. Currently free-camping at Yanga rest area 10km East of Balranald - great spot down by the billabong with heaps of room, grassy grounds and away from the road. No one else here and plenty of firewood! We checked all the rest stops east of Mildura but they all share with trucks and are virtually on the road.

We have recently spent 8 weeks at Buronga being NSW side of the Murray.

Yes, Apex CV is very nicely located and good position in relation to the Murray.

If you wish to free camp you turn left over the bridge on the Mildura side of the bridge and probably 20klm and you will find Boundary Bend and Psyche Bends. (Toilets)

In Merbein at the common there is another excellent free camp.

As well there are several small CV parks located in and around Mildura.

Check Info Centre on Deakin Avenue.
