feul container for diesel heater

hi all had a nice bit of rain here o/ight nth of sydney , hope they got some where it was needed most

my dilemma is my jerry can fuel contaier for the diesel heater , it has always been ok till this time went ot take it of to fill it and it was all caved in both sides , is this a cause of no venting from  the cap or maybe a  poor quality steel can , got me a bit puzzled , this is the first time we have run the heater and got the fuel container really low ie volume , thinkiing maybe poor venting would make it worse when it was low , anyway we will apprecaite any thoughts greatly  attached a few pics of our  fuel container

I would think the vent (if there is one !)  is blocked.     If there is no vent the vacuum created by the fuel being pumped out will collapse the side walls  of the container.

Drill a 1 mm or smaller say 0.5mm hole in the Jerry can  locking cap to vent the can. The smaller the better.   Or make sure you release the locking cap each time you use the heater.

I would be fitting a small water proof vent fitting in the new Jerry can.   donaldson-trap-breathers-1.jpg

Jerry cans are inherently sealed, so unless the pickup arrangement has a (blocked?) vent built into it, you will need to either unlatch the filler, or add a vent of some kind to prevent this happening again.

You may be able to restore your jerry can by pressurising it with compressed air... slowly AND carefully!

G/day mate, Jerry cans are designed to be air tight, they are not designed to be used as a reservoir from which you draw fuel,

the only way it can work is to install some sort of vent.

here is a link to some fuel tanks that are around

http://www.enmachind.com.au/poly-rv-accessories/diesel-tanks#.U_EGl_mSzCs

I have purchased the 53 ltr under floor tank to mount under our new van

there are slime line ones you could mount in the front boot

Cheers

Just came across this on net as I was looking at Ebersparcher D4 heater maintenance info.

He has used a  Jerry Can detachable pourer, and modified it.

I still think a little none spill  Fuel Breather valve would look neater.    They have tiny breathers for Motorbike and Trail Bike tanks that let air in but prevent fuel leakage if the bike is laid down.
