What to choose!

We are going to travel around Oz in a couple of months and don't know which would be better. A caravan or a pop up van or camping. We are planning on going for at least a year. No pets or kids. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Allana

Have you experienced any of the above ways of camping.

What would suit some people on the road for a year,  might be the end of the marriage for others.

Very expensive to buy a Camping set up,  Motor home, Caravan, (pop top or whatever) and find you actually don't like it.  What suits one partner on the road might prove to be the pitts    if you are committed to a year on the road.

I would suggest hiring something first and head off for a week or weekend.  Motor home, or if you have a suitable Vehicle to tow a caravan or camper trailer, you can hire them.

You can hire tents as well.  Setting up camp and tents, and pulling them down on a daily basis can be a  real  pain, and in the rain  frustrating.

Go and have a look and a walk around a local caravan park  where there are genuine travellers,  1630 hrs is a good time (Happy Hour). You will be surprised at how many people will  respond to your "Gudday  were just having a look at the various rigs as we think we might like to get on the road"   They will give you heaps of advice.  As you will get lots of on this Forum

Good luck

Mike

I think a lot also depends on where you want to travel?
Off road, blacktop etc

What your storage facility is.. some need a pop top to fit under the carport etc.

What capacity your Tug has may also limit your choices.

We travelled 6 months in a camper trailer and loved it..

cheers

We've always had basic camping or a wind up Jayco. Now we're so old that neither of those are realistic so are upgrading to a full caravan.
That way setup is quicker and easier.
Did I mention we are old?

Cheers.

Allana001,
We spent a lot of time (over 12 mths) researching what van was best suited for what we wanted to do. Motorhome have pros and cons. For us there were two things that ruled out a motohome:
1) It depreciates at the same rate as a car, as at the end of the day that's what it is.
2) Everywhere you go it goes with you.
Pop tops were discounted because of lack of space.
Our main objective was to have something that was comfortable enough so as not to feel we wanted to go home because of lack of comfort. Comfort comes in a number of variables.
We finally chose a caravan and have been on the road for three years. We still have to wishes to go back home any time soon.
Obviously budget is a consideration as well as the tow vehicle.
Everyone has their ideas and all mean well but at the end of the day, you are left with your decision.

for proper insulation buy a full caravan with double glazed windows..

make sure it has a battery bank and strong solar panels...

pull out the original seating and tables and put in comfortable recliner chairs.. :)

Welcome to the gang Allana, enjoy here and out in the playground.

I am currently in the playground 8 out of the 12 months a year with the Den, Avan Camper but intend being full time in the playground very soon. I will be changing to a "Hardtop" caravan to get away from having to put up and down all the time. It will be nice to just pull up and open the door without all the mucking around if only for one night or even just at lunch time.
