Newell highway between Goondiwindy and Griffith

Hi all we are planning on going to Griffith next week via the newell and would appreciate any tips on the state of the road, steep hills and good places to stop. Our rig is 19m long and she hates any hill work. We await your advise

cheers

Gday...

It will depend on how ya want to travel.

If you want to deviate slightly from the Newell on the way you could stop at Mendooran - excellent spacious camp there, you would fit the bus for sure. Flushing toilets and cold showers. Town water available to re-fill our tanks but not to connect to. Mendooran also allows you to avoid the drive over those hills between Coonabarabran and Dubbo. Good country road to and from Mendooran.

Mendooran camp = Camps 7 NSW site 411 - 31 49 28 S 149 06 53 E - 48 hour.

From Mendooran you could go to Gum Bend Lake, about 4km west of Condobolin. Again very spacious camp with flushing toilets, hot showers and town water available. Road into and out of Condobolin is pretty flat country.

Gum Bend Lake camp = Camps 7 NSW site 934 - 33 04 41 S 147 06 00 E

Then there is Lake Wyangan - 8km NW of Griffith. Another spacious camp, flushing toilets with cold shower. There is a tap but no totally sure water is potable.

The road Parkes/Condobolin/West Wyalong/Griffith is pretty flat for most of it too.

Lake Wyangan camp = Camps 7 NSW site 942 - 34 12 46 S 146 01 02 E - 72 hours

Others may nominate more good spots - but these are definitely spacious and will fit the bus ... and big enough to usually easily cater for the "GN Migration"

Cheers - John

Thanks for the reply, I guess you mean to turn left after Coonabarabran head towards Binnaway then to Mollyan and finally Mendooran.
Then Mendooran to Brocklehurst and Dubbo.
Through Dubbo to Parkes then to Condoblin and West Wyalong
Is this correct??
Cheers

Gday...

As noted above. From memory all of that journey is on good sealed roads, undulating country with no big hills.

The turn off after Coonabarabran to Mendooran is just after a bridge and looks like this -

The road after the turnoff to Mendooran all the way through to Brocklehurst is undulating and a lovely drive through interesting country.

Cheers - John
