When lighting with gas the hot water unit takes a number of efforts before it stays lit. It seems to attempt to start in bouts of 3. And then requires being switched off and on again. And a further 3 attempts then try to light. Sometimes it may take 3-4 on/off attempts before it remains alight.
However sometimes the burner is actually going and roaring away and then I can hear the igniter clicking away and the gas burner goes off. This can happen 3 to 4 times before it will stay lit.
Somebody has mentioned that the sensor needs looking at, but the manual shows no position of a sensor. The explanation given was that the sensor will recognise the gas heater is operating and will stay lit.
Another recent caravanner said he has had the same problem and fiddles with the on/off (electric) switch but I cannot see how that could really make a difference.
There has been one occasion when their must have been a bit of gas build up and when the igniter restarted there was quite a flash of flame. That's a little scary.
Remove the term couple/ignitor in front of the gas burner (one screw holds it in) clean the carbon build off with emery paper and replace.
This is correct, commonly known as a Thermal Coupling sits in the pilot flame registers heat through expansion and keeps the gas supply open in the main valve for the burners.
If pilot flame blows out main valve shuts down gas supply.
