Antibiotic overuse and allergic reaction

Hi, just wanting others thoughts and experience. I work with children and have spent a week with 70 % of them coming down with high temperatures and sniffles. So naturally I would likely pick up something. I had the flu shot this year, this didn't help. I had mild temperature, mild earache and then lost my voice, no other real symptoms. Cant work if I cant talk so go to the doctors thinking virus but need time off work to work through virus.

Doctor decides I need antibiotic, I ask why can he see infection in ears. I do not have sore throat or phlegm. Anyway being a good little patient (I never go to doctors usually) I follow doctors orders and take antibiotic. After 1st day I have diarrhea and feel like vomiting, bad taste in mouth and developed an annoying cough. By day 3 these symptoms are making me sicker than my original loss of voice. I have decided not to continue antibiotic as I think it is a reaction to the antibiotic.

My feeling is that I should not have been prescribed antibiotic in the first place as it was likely from the history that it was viral. I am now taking a pro-biotic to try and fix the problem caused by the antibiotic. So what are your thoughts? Are my thoughts rational here or should I go back to the doctor whose judgement I question in the first place to discuss the issue. I am getting better without the antibiotic I believe.

I see your way of thinking baute! The medics seem to think we need antibiotics for viruses because we could (and some of us often do) get a secondary infection. Was the antibiotic named Erythromycin? It made all my kids sick when they were little. Google it for more info.

The flu shot will only protect you from the particular strain of influenza that's in the fluvax each year. You can still get other types of flu and colds and other viruses.

Thank you so much for replying Gerty, you got it in one. Yes it is Erythromycin! I have googled it and found many other people with the same sorts of reactions. I am sitting here pondering whether to just make my own decisions based on how I know my body is reacting to the illness and the given antibiotic. Your response just helps me confirm my thoughts are logical so thanks.

Yes, not all antibiotics work the same for everyone. And I always add a probiotic if I've had that sort of reaction. Take care.
