Did you use the dowell pin hole to retain the handle ?
I did look at that option and decided to leave it intact
Was a little concerned about compromising the integrity of the unit.
No. I drilled hole above the pin. I used double ended flat nuts on the thread. Used in joining computer work stations divisions together.
I didn't want the whole mechanism to drop out. You could use a spare towball inserted to prevent this but this was easier.

Another option.
Knock out the "C" pin and replace it with an "R" clip. To remove the handle simply pull out the clip and remove the handle. When you want to use it just reverse the procedure.
No other modication required.
