Had a phone call today from an woman with what appeared to be an Indian accent saying she represented the Federal Government and if a ring an 02800 number I can get $5000 plus that the government owes me from the carbon tax, when you answer the phone there is a short delay before the call is connected ( a sure sign of something strange may be happening) then she asks you to confirm your name and address, then gives you a ref No and phone No to ring and you will get your money. ya right. I confirmed my name but not my address by asking her questions and she forgot to ask again for my address but gave me the info to ring a Mr Andrew which of course I didn't. My Father is after me in the phone book and when I called him to warn of a possible call, he said he had just got one.
Not just in WA, the phone rang about 15 mins ago (Sth Aust) and on answering I got the delay then the Indian accent, and a guy telling me he was from "Windows" that's a new one they're usually from Microsoft. Told me my IP address kept registering a fault, and if I would like to turn my computer on and confirm the address he could fix it!! I asked him how he could fix my windows computer when it was an Apple. Answer, "Why have you got an apple" and then click!! All the time my "windows" computer was sitting there with The Grey Nomads Forum open.
Was a bit of a laugh, but be careful folks "they're" out there still. BASTRADS!!!
I very rarely receive scam calls, firstly because I have an unlisted landline number and secondly I'm registered with Govt. I think it is, facility that doesn't or shouldn't permit scam calls. I've forgotten what it's called !! Anyway my trick is that whenever I receive a call of this nature, I say "can you hang on a moment, someone is at the door". I put the phone down and about 15 minutes later when I check back, they are gone.
Another way to get rid of these a s s holes if you want to have a bit of fun. When you call your Bank, Insurer, Telstra or who ever, you will be asked to identify yourself with full name, address, date of birth etc. But when someone calls you and claims to be from say, Telstra, and asks for this personal information, I just say why should I give you this information ? How do I know you are from Telstra ? And if you feel inclined you can drag them on for quite a while, at the same time giving them no information at all.
But the point is we shouldn't have to put up with these nuisance calls at all. But how do you stop it ?

Since light travels faster than sound, some people appear bright until you hear them speak.
You are thinking of the "Do Not Call" register. Only works with "honest" scammers!! Does not stop Australian based charities from calling.
When I get a call and they address me by name I tell them that person is no longer at this address. Seems to have cured the problem in recent weeks.
I can't afford to hang up when there is a delay as our son lives in Viet Nam and all his calls come through in that manner.
Tell them nothing (maybe where to shove the phone) and hang up.
Cheers
Hurls
Yeah, that's the one Mark. "Do Not Call" Register. And yes I have had an occasional call from a Charity, but I treat them the same way. It's not that I don't feel compassion for most Charities and their causes, but you just can't support everyone...

Thanks Sheba, I think it was worth another warning. And as for the Do Not Call Register, both my Father and I are on it, it does not stop scam calls from overseas only Nuisance call in Australia as far as I am aware.
