Advertising Pop Ups on GN site

Hello to everyone

Is anybody having problems or has the site changed since last night?

When I log on using the home computer I get these advertising pop ups over the screen making it very hard

to use .Also in some of the text in the editorials there are words in a green colour and you happen to go near them

they will bring another pop up!    But if I go on the IPad like I am now no problems, clear sailing, straight roads get the drift

anyone have any ideas?

I know there are people out there relaxing in the tropics with 30 degree temps wanting something to do here it it as Lana and I

are babysitting this week down at Mt Martha with cooling 78kph winds and 7degrees . But the good news NO FLIES !!!

thanks in anticipation.           Brian &  LanaconfuseJ

Brian and Lana, sorry but I can't help with your pop up problem but do have a small request of you please.

Would it be possible not to rub it in about the weather you are getting in Mt Martha please. I have to put up with the weather here in Townsville being low teens at night and mid to high 20's during the day. Oh! and no wind to speak of. It's very hard to cope with and I tell you that for free.

You probably picked up a little bug that can do that while on another site or via a email. furious See if you can roll back to a time before when you got the problem. The forum is all good so its a bug you picked up no

Pete, as I thought it was my computer its has been put through so many cleaning programs it's not funny - taken me hours. But I'm only getting the pop ups on the GN forum no other forums or web pages. If it is a bug on my system then its well hidden but then since there's no ID to the pop ups I wouldn't be able to find it anyway.

There is malware that does this. It's fairly common I believe. It doesn't explain why you would get the popups on this forum only though.

Hi all
I knew my daughter was right when she married this guy "Simon" the son in law

The ads were created by another piece of nasty software called PassShow. My whiz bang son in law removed the application and bobs your uncle, actually he is my brother in law!

He did say it wasn't the wombat.... no rootes and leaves but strong possability that it was the "DINGO"

Thanks everyone I have NO idea what he did as Im just coming to grips with my log tables from tech school in the 1950's

REGARDS Brian

Try doing a restore to a date before you had this problem.
It is malware you have picked up some how.
Malwarebytes is a good program to find this problem but doesn't always find everthing
Have a look through your programs and uninstall anything that you don't recognize especially if the date of the install is recent.
I had the same problem several months ago and I think I received it when installing some freeware program so be careful when downloading free programs and make sure you only download what you really want.
Cheers
David

I too have had this problem off and on over the last few months only on this site. I got rid of it by running malware removal software and it hasn't recurred as yet.

Have you cleared your history and cookies, that often helps but I'm talking Apple here. That clears you tracks from previously visited sites.

I had this problem. It took quite a while to figure out what the problem was then clear it out.

In the beginning I uninstalled and the reinstalled my Browser which did not help at all

1. Installed AVG Anti Virus Software - still problems, (I had been using Microsoft Essentials as my virus protection-on my sons advice)

2. Researched Malware (As other have suggested)

3. Downloaded Malware and did a scan

4. Solved the problem. (400 problems)

In my research I found out that that Malware was attaching itself to some of my up dates which had boxes to tick like adding task bars etc.

I do not tick any of these boxes now or I uncheck them as the case might be. I also read the instructions very carefully when updating or installing.

I do not do Auto updates either because you can't check what they want to do to my computer.

I am probably being over cautious now but it was a lot of mucking around to get rid of the crap. Jen

Finally managed to get rid of the annoying pop-ups. I know I got them when I updated some "free" software and didn't un-check some of the option boxes - lesson learned. I had already done everything suggested in this thread and a some more. What finally knocked the thing over was starting the system in protected mode or whatever they call it - press F8 during boot up and select start windows with networks. Ran all the malware destroyers, virus busters and adware scanners and disablers while in that mode and no more pop ups. Took a fair bit of work - it would have been easier to pay proper attention to what I was doing in the first place.
