I am thinking that it would be fair to charge $5.00 for the camping spot and $5.00 per person etc...then that is fair for the solo travelers too

Easy to plug into power here....supplying you with rain water here may be a problem? There is a dump point at both of our local towns

Look at a general cost of $1-$3 over night for Power consumption..

If you ran normal 1500-2000 Ceramic Heater expect to use between 3-10kw's of power..[Dependent on time running]

and that is just the heater... Depending on air-con and the duration being used the same in power consumption...

WOW !!!
Once again I am overwhelmed by the wonderful response for such wise people.

I have decided to write up a new post telling you all where we are and how to contact us and how much etc so that you can pull-in and stay for a while.

As for the insurance side of things...please be assured that we have "farm stay" insurance in our massive insurance policy. Has some restrictions but letting you stay is not one of them :)

As for what happens when the B&B has guests....We are fortunate enough to have a house where guests can access our bathroom and tiolet from the outside...with out disturbing our family.

We would really like to encourage HELP ON OUR FARM in return for enjoying our space....everyone has something to offer...from weeding the veggie patch to mending clothes to removing the cobwebs which I can't see because I am vision impaired somewhat.

Stay tuned for my next post and encourage others to keep our information so that they too can stay here on our beautiful piece of paradise...creating wonderful memories for everyone :)

Sorry to say this, but I'm getting more cynical the more I travel.
There are lots of "donation /honesty boxes " in camp grounds or national parks, and we've seen people ignore them, use the site, and leave early before the ranger turns up. The same people don't bother to hide that they have been, leaving their rubbish behind.

Regarding your "advertising" If you list your property in Camps Australia Wide, or Wikicamps (you don't even have to do it, anyone can post on there) You will end up with all sorts of campers, not just grey nomads. Be careful how you market this wonderful idea. Also, word of mouth between GNs is one of the best forms of free advertising.

PS; When we had property before hitting the road, we were happy to accept $25.00 per week, purely to cover electricity. Since then, we have realised that power usage is probably only between $1.00 and $2.00 per day.

What did that latter estimate cover?

Say for instance a user connected to power (with no other back up items like solar or generator etc) and had their fridge, aircon, stove ring (some stoves have at least one 240V hot plate) and oven if any, lights, TV, computer etc, all running on 240V wouldn't the usage be a lot higher than $1/$2 a day???? (add 240V charge to aux battery as well) ? confuse

Vic,

Computer, camera, phone, all LED lights, fridge, TV, WiFI, pump are 12v only. (if there is anything we have missed, it is probably 12v) Our hot water, oven and three cook tops are gas only. We have one 240v cooktop, electric frypan, electric jug and toaster, aircon & 240v charger, when on power. WE also have 405 watts of solar panels power permanently on the roof. During the course of the day, when solar is operational, that takes precedence over the 240v charger because the solar punches in over 25 amps as required during the day, so our actual 240v usage is very minimal. This is a standard set up for the majority of dedicated off road caravans.

Our hosts in Esperance gave us the $1-$2.00 price based on what they were charged for their trailable house boat when in a marina at Murray Bridge. The houseboat has similar/same requirements as a caravan. I might add that we gave them $25.00 per week regardless.....

Thanks DM, I didn't know your estimate was based on your RV and the houseboat.

Some Caravans/camper trailers have 3 way fridges so if on power in a CP would probably be on 240V, only on 12V if travelling, or gas when needed when stationary etc. Other appliances including TV etc have 240V inlets & wall outlets also, albeit some item leads have a transformer on the lead for those running on 12V.

My scenario was for those vans that are not fitted out for freedom camps and just as they come from the general sales yards etc to give the thread poster and idea of what some could use, depending on how they are set up.

Yes you have a good set up for freedom camping, I think every RV should be set up that way when they are made, then many would not have to worry about powered sites and caravan parks. smile

Great idea .... Using what we have paid for basic facilities with power, I would be happy to pay up to $10 for 2 adults per night. I would still be wary of thinking council and your insurers would not have something to say about it, sadly there will always be people who look for a quick buck and litigation is becoming the popular easy way to do it. I am sure as a business woman you would Be careful and at least run it past your solicitor.
