WHY don't I like Apples ?

For many years I have used an android smart phone, and been wary of Apple products because I did not like the way you were locked in by Apple.  For some years Carol has used an iPhone, and now also has an iPod, and an iPad she is what you would call well hooked.

At work I am responsible for a fleet of about 120 smart phones, about 118 iPhones, and only a couple of Androids, not a problem as I had a gentleman working for me that was iPhone literate. Unfortunately my trusty slave has left, and now I need to try to help all the iPhone users. I gave in, and now use an iPhone, still dont like it.

On the weekend a fruit fly got into Carols apple, and it just stopped working!

What to do?

We had to go to the Genius Bar at an Apple store, luckily we were passing close to the one at Charlestown, the only one  between Hornsby and the Gold Coast. Had to ring in advance and make an appointment. When we arrived Derek the Genius took it away, and came back after 10 mins, yep its stuffed, it will need to be replaced.

Then the fun began, you will need to log in to your iCloud account and release the old phone, simple thing to do? Nope, not if you can not remember what the iClod account name and password are, it was setup two years ago just to start the new phone.

When we eventually got past that (probably an hour), it prompts for your date of birth, then will not accept it, as it was not an option to record it when the account was set up. Back on the phone to an Indian gentleman from Apple customer care, and on it goes.

It took almost two hours to deliver a dead phone, and get a replacement.

And people wonder why I think the only thing fruit is good for is eating.

David, as you may already know I too have the 3 Apple products as Carol and think they are the best things since, well, Eve. My iPone is the best mobile phone I have had since the brick I first owned.

However, you have now got me concerned during my travels as I will have to chuck them all in the bin at the next fruit fly inspection area in the playground, bugga, a thought that never occurred to me prior to your post. Thanks mate.

I hope things get sorted quickly for Carol. See you soon my friends. Still on track to leave here 4/8.

I think you are being a bit harsh blaming Apple when you are responsible for the password. It is not Apple's fault that you forgot it. These things are put in place for if you lose or someone steals your Apple product.
I use a txt file for each individual login so I can remember the zillions of usernames and passwords which we are expected to remember. I don't list the exact username and pass just clues to what it is and rarely do I have a problem.
These are saved in dropbox and can be accessed from anything. I have had my problems at an Apple store myself as they replaced an Ipone and the replacement wouldn't work with my sim and it turned out it was locked to Vodafone. Also they told me that the phone didn't exist on their records even though I got it off them the day before. Yes 2 hours later sorted out.
But I love the Iphone and I think Apple are very good with products way out of Warranty with the OOW replacement.

Yes I accept the criticism, it was not Apple's fault that Carol forgot her password, it was recorded as a txt file on the phone BTW.

BUT, when Carol set up her phone, the Apple account was an afterthought, it effectively did nothing. Apple did not ask us a year later if we wanted them to lock her phone to that account, that was entirely there decision.

ALSO when Carol set up her iCloud account, it was not an option to record her birthday, and now apple insist that you enter your birthday before you can get in to manage your account, and guess what you have to enter something, and the something you enter has to match what you entered when you set up the account. Pretty Stupid really.

I stand by my criticism.

I would also recommend that any of you have old accounts go into them, and record your birthday, if you can.

My old non smart phone died & I replaced it with an Android based Samsung.  A decision based on price.

Then SWMBO finally decided to activate her birthday present & got an iPad.

Buggar ... Suddenly I had to become an expert in both operating systems.  Got a copy of Ipad for dummies & booked in for lots of iPad training sessions.

All good.  Armed with this and much help from the grandchildren who all have Apple thingos, we were operational.

Not so lucky with Android.  Got a manual from a mate but that's about it.

I have had no experience with Apple service except for their polished sales process & their free user training, which were very good.

Possibly not a fair comparison but I find Apple far easier and intuitive to use.

When my windows laptop dies I'll look at a Mac replacement .. but price, applications & hardware compatability might be a factor.

I have used a Samsung smartphone for quite a while now and have raved about it (except the speaker quality which is quite poor)

Recently my wife swapped her old cheap Samsung for her sons old old iPhone 4 when he upgraded to an iPhone 5 after he dropped it and shattered the back plate. (I got a bloke to replace the backplate for $10.00 and now it's as good as as new).

I had to learn the iPhone operating system so I could teach my wife how to use it. I was surprised how little there was to learn as it is much like the android system but even easier. I was also very happy with  the quality of it, including the sound quality. My wife is on an Optus plan so we dropped into an Optus shop and they easily transferred her info from the Samsung sim card onto a new smaller iPhone sim card and she was ready to go.

As you can see, I am very impressed with the Iphone and you definitely get what you pay for.

BTW I first bought a second hand HTC smart phone and put up with it for 3 months and still couldn't master the stupid Windows operating system that was installed on it so I sold it and got a 2nd hand Samsung

Cheers

Jon

I had a HTC before my iPhone 4s and hated everything about it and like you Jon got rid of it after 3 months. I gave it to my son in law and he thinks it's the thing since sliced bread. Both phones are still going strong nearly 3 years later.

We're Apple converts, my wife couldn't text messages on the early android phone, changed over to an IPhone and now texts frequently, not sure if that's a good thing though, :) My work has supplied my mobile phones for many years, I just love the IPhone for ease of use compared to earlier smartphones, we both have IPads and find them usefull when on holidays, and everything is backed up on our Mac computer at home. I'll probably buy a MacAir to take on our holidays for storage and editing our photos while we travel.
