GARMIN GPS

Howdy all,

I know this will annoy some as it has been discussed before I think so sorry to those people but I am having trouble getting anything through the search button.

I have a 5" Navman My series and just about to run out of free upgrades.  I am thinking of upgrading to a 6" or 7" Garmin with lifetime free upgrades and If I am correct can get CAW on it.  Your input and any info will be much appreciated.

Edit....any thoughts on the Hema GPS would also be appreciated.

Dougwe, CAW is supposed to be compatible to Navman, however when I bought "6", it would not talk to my Navman.  I ended up getting my money back.

edit: oooops, just realised you are looking at upgrading to a Garmin - can't help with that.  CAW website should be able to tell you if they are compatible

Doug we have two garmins ;one top of range at the time a another mid range that we got with our road service renewal some time back a they both accepted caw 5 that we had.

Another traveller had downloaded it a put in on ours.its just a list of site numbers a names;the book maps are still required to find where the sites are. Once you have picked a site just go to the relative number on gps;saves entering co-ordinates.

I have a Garmin with free map updates on it Doug and added the CAW6 app on it (cost about $20 I think from memory) but from what I can see, it upgrades the maps but not the Camps app sites, but you will need to check that out, I haven't used it in awhile.

Garmin the best one, I do not have the Hema it is expensive and mainly for the outback (I think)

I have the Nuvi 3590M great unit with free updates, CAW is not worth the money IMHO, the suction for the windscreen is NBG again IMHO, I have a suction mount from RAM in the US great unit and lifetime warranty I recently damaged the rubber suction and sent them an email and they said ok just pay for postage for a new one.

look here http://www.rammount.com/SearchResults/tabid/38/searchBy/description/criteria/071065082077073078/Default.aspx

Doug,
I have the Garmain 3590 with life time map updates.. Very nice but not that impressed with it. Poor warning for if you accidentally go over the speed limit and speed/red light cameras.

I also run the HEMA HN7 and that is far better. The HN7 has normal turn by turn street/navigation via iGO and HERE maps, as well as the off road with OziExplorer side. Sits on the windscreen better than the Garmin unit as well.
With the HN7 you only get 2 years free updates with the iGO maps.

For me I would chose the HN7. But GPS units are all personal choice, like one model or not, bit like your 2 cuties in the van.. biggrin

Dennis,
Does your Dezl take POI's or is it limited to a max number. I use the CMCA ones and it is a big file.
The 760 lets you add your vehicle data and has truck routes doesn't it?
Rude qustion but how much and from where?
Regards
Rob

Sounds like the Garmin is a good unit so will have a look around later in the week, in the mean time I will keep an eye on this thread.

Hi Rob , I haven`t used that function yet but yes you can enter your own , and yes the DEZL lets you put in the vehicle data ( Motorhome , Truck Car ) and gives good warnings on obstacles , narrow roads , tight bends , school crossings and the speed zones that mobile speed camera`s set up in . Also Bluetooth for your phone and an auxiliary input for a reversing camera I think ? The 7" screen is magic and easy to navigate through.Best to check the Garmin website to make sure my facts are right . There was the Garmin 260 which is the same size but it does not have the RV functions that I wanted, and from memory it was about $420 from Harvey Norman. I had a Navman 5" when I had my work ute and this one leaves it for dead. I also installed the Camps 7 data base for $19.95. Hope this helps.

I've got a Garmin 7" love it because I can read it so easily. Well worth the money.

The Navman MyEscapeII has lifetime maps upgrade and will take POI files, and does all that the equivalent level Garmin will do (plus a bit more). I have CAW 6 loaded on mine, plus a heap of other custom POI from POIDB site. The 2 main drawbacks with Navman is the rubbish map update software that sometimes has trouble working, and the Garmin glass screens are better in high glare situations.
