SWMBO received this from the Tax Dept today in the mail. She is on a aged pension and has not worked for several years.
Apparently according to them she owed $2 (two dollars) and should have lodged a return in the 2010/2011 tax year when still a pensioner.
They claimed she owned shares in company personally which was a super fund and not her personal shares. This is not a hoax letter and she has been in contact with the Tax Dept and she is collecting documents to prove her case.
Is this the present Governments further crack down on pensioners and those who can least afford it? This is really scraping the bottom of the barrel. It has already cost them more than $2 for the letter and post etc.
She had never been contacted about this prior to receiving this notice....

Pity the one cent coin isn't still around eh! 1c per month/year. Bloody ridiculous Vic! I've got a couple of people they could check out who stole cash from a deceased estate. It's a pity the police wouldn't take it on, but I tried.

At first we thought it was a hoax letter trying to get cash, but we looked up the official tax site and rang their correct number.
Still reeling in disbelief. SWMBO is gathering bullets at the moment in the form of documents to fire back at them, the operator who spoke to her at Tax has noted that she is attending to the "problem" as they see it so she does not get fined, for god's sake!
The only amount they claim is outstanding is $2, don't know how they work that out!!!
Thanks Wombat, you are so kind and thoughtful for a Wombat
When Carol retired she had her final return done by a qualified accountant, that was at the end of the financial year, and never worked after that.
She had a letter from the tax office saying she didn't have to lodge a return anymore unless she went back to work. However she still kept a super fund going of which she and one of her workmates had, but the super fund were the trustees and not their personal funds etc.
The fund is still going as the workmate is still at work, but tax does not come into the picture until she pulls her funds out and then tax has to be paid when she receives her share etc. If that makes sense.
The tax department are in error on this one, I can understand them toughening up on tax etc, but they need to go for the big end of town not pensioners, bloody disgusting IMHO.

Vic, did you see the segment on tv tonight about how to disable the tap & go option?
This is the ATO cracking down on tax evaders, I seem to remember someone in an interview saying they were going after every last dollar (or was it cent).
Pity they don't have the gonads to go after the billions the multi nationals transfer of to low tax environments through transfer pricing.

Well apparently the tax department will have to find other low income earners/pensioners to harass for money, SWMBO was advised today that they made a mistake and no she does not have to pay the $2 or lodge a tax return and will not be penalised.
They have investigated her case and they were mistaken! I wonder how many other poor souls they are putting through the hoops instead of those they should really be after....
My daughter is a bookkeeper and told me 3 weeks ago there is a crackdown going on.
The NAB bank sends me statement showing 2cents CR for a card,,, they don't know how to kill the CR as 2 cents not recognised with rounding up/down.
Once had an Amex Gold card which I gave up a few years back. I thought I'd paid all but they sent me a Statement for 2 cents. After about 6 months and on receipt of another Statement, I managed to find an old 2 cent coin in the house. I taped it to the Statement, put it in an envelope and posted it without a stamp !! Crazy, you think they would just write it off.

yes you should, they have sent a few demands now put it back on them I bet you get a reply saying their computer is unable to issue a receipt for such a small amount, then you can get back to them and say well how can it issue a bill for that amount
