Free Campsites on River Darling

Hi All,

I am planning a trip From Wentworth in NSW to Bourke in the Future to try to Follow the River Darling.

It looks like the Road to Menindie will be better because its supposed to have some bitumen paving to Pooncarie at least.

We would like to try to slowly touch in at as many points along the way and not miss any area. We have allowed about 4 weeks for the trip travelling with an 18ft van with Landcruiser Tow vehicle.

Are there any travellers who can suggest some good sites

smile

yes I remember the Louth & Tilpa now

was more particularly thinking of the Wentworth - Menindie area my memory only goes as far as There being a Campground @ Pooncarie. With the Idea in mind of touching as many spots along as is feasibly possible and the slow timeframe. I was unable to find any data about the River Access unlike the Books about the Murray River.

I have visited just about every spot possible on the Murray from Echuca to the Mouth.

Thanks for the Info

There is a site "youcamp" that lists properties to camp on and they are very cheap, just farmers battling to stay afloat.

Not likely to be sealed soon. The road from Mungo National Park the Wentworth about 2 weeks ago was corrugated most of the way...the Mildura Road. I went from Balranald to Mungo and the 150 km was great..50 was sealed and last 100 dirt. Folk said road to Menindee was rough.

I'm going along the Darling from Menindee. .depending on road conditions but Wilcannia comes before Tilpa and Louth. Good luck maybe I'll run into you.

We have done the Darling from Bourke down, the last was in 2010. There is not a lot of access to the river apart from Louth & Tilpa north of Wilcannia and there were signs saying not to trespass on the properties by trying to find access to the river!

This might help with some info.  Google "darling river run"

http://visitoutbacknsw.com/darling-river-run/

We camped at Old Buckanbee station, but that was quite a few years ago now. (as in 2008 or 2009)

Have been on the trip and found a couple of nice little spots that had our hearts Pumpin

There was a small area about 15km North Wentworth called Darling Campsites in the Camps Australia Wide book was on Private Property and Donation was $10 per night.
It was down on a low area right on the river and had plenty of areas to camp. The fishing was good for a while as we stayed for 4 nights. The Owners provided fire boxes and rubbish tins.

Will be going back next year in Autumn when the green comes again.

We then drove to Ellerslie high on the River top stayed overnight and moved on. As supplies were running a little low we decided to Move on to Pooncarie to fill the fridge and cupboards so we stayed in the caravan Park. The road to Menindee was crap so we crossed the river on the wentworth side of the road about 3 Km

Ricketty Bridge but obviously strong enough just wandered around on the Low darling road doing overnights whenever.

So the trip ended up a whimper from planned
