The first time we stayed there was long before we had a van.

Took an on site van & what a heap it was complete with smelly mattress & warped cupboard doors.

The wind blew like buggery & howled in thru the cracks & holes bringing in a mist of sand. Thankfully we had our own bedding to snuggle under.

What a miserable time we had!

Have been back several times since getting our van & always enjoy staying there.  In the Summer time of course.

Luxury cabins have replaced the terrible on site vans though (I think).

We too have stayed at this park a couple of times and whilst it has a few things to recommend it, like the proximity to the beach and the nicely grassed sites, the overall view we formed was that we would avoid it in future.

One of our greatest concerns had nothing to do with the park itself, rather the lack of adequate policing on the road that runs alongside. It's frequently used as a pseudo drag strip and noisy cars regularly charge down at insane speeds waking the dead with their loud exhausts and screeching tyres. They should push to have speed humps installed at regular intervals and the problem would largely disappear.

Another aspect we didn't like was the use of the park by tour buses. Often they arrive late and leave early and assume that they are the only ones in the place. From our experience, most C/Ps in major cities are less than ideal and almost all overcharge like wounded bulls. We have vowed to avoid cities whenever possible in our future travels.

We are staying here at the moment on Shake down trip. Not too many here as it is lousy weather. School holidays and the "powers that be" have closed the kids entertainment room (indoor playground for tots, slot machines, table tennis etc) to re-surface the floor!!!! No discounts for that and $42 per night plus kids extra. Duh!

Is the Semaphore park still operating Dave?   Only a small park so need to book but we enjoyed it, especially the train at the rear that runs into Semaphore shopping centre.

Is there a beach named Glenelg Dave ? I pulled into a parking area on the beach one Saturday night, may have been next to Lifesavers but can't be sure. Watching TV and had a belly full of red when there was a knock on the door about 9 p.m. I didn't respond. Then I heard a guy on the telephone and thought if he's calling the cops, I'm in trouble because I was sloshed !!So I opened up and he was a friendly guy, Council Inspector,  and we had a long chat. Anyway his buddy arrived so that's who he called. He told me the people across the road had complained about me parking there, so he told me he was going home at that time. If I would drive out of the parking lot, come back in 10 minutes, he would be gone, and to park in an area close to the road so the neighbors couldn't see me. Which I did. I was surprised that they were working late on a Saturday and that this guy was so understanding.

I was lucky to strike a guy who was understanding and no fine. It was the only time in 4 years on the road, I've been challenged by an Inspector.

There are not many places to hide and park overnight in that area, so next day I left Adelaide and moved on.

ya this is the beach at glenelg, there was  a big car park on the end of Anzac Hwy. ripped it up for a Harbour & built multi story app around it, lots of restaurants  a good spot in summer.  parking is a problem there.
you can get the tram from Glenelg to Adelaide

Thanks Dave.

In regards to the old tram we went on that years ago to Glenelg, it was fantastic!   A bloke was asking the conductor/driver how to get to a certain street along they way.   He pulled the tram up near where this bloke wanted to go, got out with him and pointed out how he had to walk to get to this particular street, couldn't see that happening anywhere else in this day and age.

The miniature train at the rear of Semaphore Caravan Park was an experience too, running along the beach front.  I bought a winter jacket at Semaphore, still have it and wear it.

Those busses that run on auto on a track are an experience also, all tourists should take a ride on them. smile

PS:  Stayed at Adelaide Shores years ago too on grassed sites, was ok from memory, can't recall the prices I think it was a Top Tourist then so got the discount.   My brother lives at Henley for a number of years, he was the state manager for I & J Seafoods.

Thanks Dave, yes that is where we got off.   I don't think there is another like it in Oz, I remember the driver taking his hands off the wheel and reading his paper!....
