I am wanting to head off again... Yes I know not the best weather this time of year, but hey one can't ignore the travelling call when they hear hear it!
Hoping for a few suggestions from those who can.
I specifically want to head for Gippsland.... I'm thinking of starting off around Wonthaggi way then head towards Golden/Paradise beach maybe and then move on for Bainsdale, Lakes Entrance and onwards. I am seeking recommendations on free/cheap camps, in particular near water where I can launch my kyak for sone fishing?
Howdy Colin, I heard my name mentioned so here I am.
Wonthaggi hey, mmmmm, let me see. Sorry no free camps anywhere in the Bass Coast area sorry mate, they are very unfriendly to the traveller in that department, they want ya business but won't give ya a free camp sorry, so much so they don't warn ya they book ya. Now if you decide to stay in Wontahggi the Coalfields CVP is the one to go to DO NOT go to Miners Rest and I tell you that for free.
As for Gippsland in general being my local playground I don't visit the free camps to be honest but do suggest you get a copy of Camps Australia Wide and the Wiki Camps app for your phone or similar, work with both of those as I do and you will find something.
Having said that though when in Lakes Entrance, one of my favourite places, I stay at the "North Arm CVP" small but really nice and reasonably priced. The North Arm of the Lakes is right out front and they have their own little jetty for the use of so that't my thought.
You will find some nice free/alternative camps heading north so no probs there.
Colin, just get out there mate.

Hi Colin, The country in Winter is different and just as beautiful. Go explore. I have stayed at Korumburra, the CP there is lovely and a good spot to anchor for a few days to explore that area. It is not a bad price either from what I can remember.
There is a wonderful free camp at a little place called Heyfield. It is on the oval there and I think you are able to stay for 48hours. Also a great spot to stay for that time. This little town has set themselves up to welcome the travellers, you do have to be self contained, there is a dump point, no showers, but toilets. The locals are lovely and will certainly come along and have a chat. There is a free camp near Rosedale, but it is right on the highway and gets very busy, better off to drive the extra k's to Heyfield I think. Rosedale is a really nice little place to stop for a coffee and something to eat in their many little cafes.
I also stayed at Warragul CP, excellent place. Good place to hold up once again to explore the country around there.
As Dougwe said certainly use your Wikicamps app and the camps book.
Good luck and the excellent thing about travelling in Winter, there are not many around, everybody else is up north working on their tans.

A few places come to mind following the A1. On the road from Orbost to Marlo, there are a number of grass areas you can pull into next to the river. The better areas are closer to Marlo, but don't free camp at Marlo itself, not permitted. Fishing is supposed to be good at Marlo, but I had no luck...
On the A1 highway, past Cann River, just before the NSW/Vic border on the left side there is an abandoned Caravan Park. Toilets and water but no other facilities. Can't recall name of place but it was very popular with Caravans and MHs.
Out of Sale take the Longford-LochSport Road to Golden Beach. Thru to Seaspray is several kilometers and there are numerous parking areas on the beach side of the road between Golden Beach and Seaspray.
Hope that helps.

Since light travels faster than sound, some people appear bright until you hear them speak.
If you are going a little further east drop in to Orbost, Marlo and particularly Cape Conran.
We choose to stay at the CP in Marlo but there are plenty of hiding places in the forest on the road between Cape Conran and Cabbage Tree Creek if you want to free camp.
The local ranger patrols most places and asks you to move on if you park up too long in the popular bits.
You can drop the Yak into the Yeerung river easy as.
Of course the Snowy and Bridribb rivers are at Marlo and the fishing is always good.
I haven't even mentioned Bemm River yet, that's another possibility, perfect for the Yak and free camping albeit on the sly is in the forests.
Hi Bald Nomad
Nothing much around Wonthagi, but go around to Port Albert and you get a free night right on the water in the car park, a few k's on and there's an overnighter at Yarram it is a bit noisy though from vehicles going over the bridge.
There are a few freebies and low cost places around that way, just the other side of Sale there's a road offto the right as one is heading to Bairnsdale and it will take you down to the water (have you got the bible /camps 6 or 7? I cannot think of the camp name right now but it is on the water beside a sailing club but in the week one could easily stay there a couple of nights in this weather....
I am heading down that way myself after I have finnished this house sit and before the next one!
