RE: Bigpond Spike in Internet Usage ??????

My usage jumps when my Grandchildren come to visit ... armed with their iPads & iPods .

So now I turn off the modem when they are here.

 You got it in one.

They have lots of games that they can play without the Internet access.

Change the setting in the Modem so the Password to Log on is changed..

That will stop them from using it..

The password change is an option but I usually only have the modem turned on when I am using the 'puter, though SWMBO now has an iPad & turns it on and forgets to turn it off.

Thanks Juergen, I have already done that.  I only leave my pc modem on when I am using it also, otherwise turn it off if I am not using it for any length of time and overnight....

Hi Vic
Not sure if you use face book but have noticed that videos in posts start playing automatically now..
I am guessing that this would add dramatically to your download use.. not sure how to turn it off.

cheers

Mike

There is one Facebook Page I am interested in which is the only reason I go there at all.

I managed to turn the video preview off which will save heaps of download..

Cheers Mike

Our son and relations are the same, after a while they get round to using their mobile for what it was originally made for ie making phone calls, so give it away, but let them all know you have so that your invite's will come via a phone call, that's the way I do it, if I don't get an invite they miss out on the company of a great couple of wombat's. biggrinbiggrin

Has anyone with Bigpond noticed a spike in their internet usage? (being used up quicker on their monthly allowance) confuse

In the first few days of my new monthly allowance I used 2.5 gb which for my usage which is unusual for what I normally use, I also noticed my past few months usages seemed to have increased also.

I checked my downloads (check My Documents and then Downloads also) and used the Bigpond online calculator to check my allowance usage and there is no way it should have been that much over a few days.

Bigpond were unable to give me a satisfactory explanation except to say change my Wifi password (they coordinate the change but do not see your password).

I suspect they have made changes to their system that is using more of the monthly allowance or "someone" is hacking the allowance for their own use.   I was told that if you use an external mail service like Windows Live or Outlook that you are charged for two downloads of your emails, the first to your bigpond account and then your external mail service when they download there.

Anyone else find their usage has mysteriously gone up???

Well, after making a complaint to their complaints department (you guessed it, Philipines based) and after weekly phone updates for the past couple of weeks to say they are still investigating from that department, I finally got a call today to say the problem had been fixed and I would get a credit for the excessive usage on my account.

When I asked what the problem was they just said it was in their system but had now been fixed, so I am not sure if it was a technical or human problem, but at least the matter has hopefully been resolved.  So see how my account usage goes in future.

Vic I haven't read every post so someone may have already said this but I had a spike in my usage when I got the new laptop with Windows 8 on it. Until I turned off some of the 'tiles' which regularly updated, I had tripled my usage and got an email from my ISP. Just a suggestion.

I have been here just very busy at the moment getting house ready for sale. Going to downsize and will be moving to Port Macquarie which is located on mid north coast.

Have not had a lot of time to post ,just welcoming the newbies. Once this weekend is out the way and the open house is done will I hope have more time to play with my nomad friends.

Adele asks to say hello. She has been in a moon boot after bunion surgery and is only just starting to hop around.Beauty is that at the moment she can't catch me when I give her stick

I think when she gets going I will be in heaps of trouble . And thankyou very much for the concern. We are both fine.

Me thinks maybe I should have sent you a PM rather than an answer in the reply post.

Anyway Ron take care my frie

Thanks NeilnRuth, in this case the fault was at their end, but I know what you mean about the automatic updates etc, they also slow the speed of your pc down quite a bit.   I do my updates on manual, although still get notified about them.   I am still using Windows 7.

Be interesting to see how much they credit me with on my next bill.  hmm
