Paul after Sunday things will settle down a little as all the extra curricular activities here in Townsville will be over. The School Hols will also be in the final week. Busy this weekend due to the V8 Supercars but they finish late tomorrow. I was unaware of the South of Townsville question.

however we are having some questions because of Goverment info
we will possibly end up at Blue Water but wanted to
get more accurate info about the camps also.
the ones on the south entrance to T'ville.
The place seems to be very crowded at the moment.
Cheers. From Paul
I phoned the number for Bowling Green National Park to get info about Alligator Creek Campground Camps6 #43 only to get put onto a guy in Brisbane who knew nothing about the place and ended up suggesting that I get on to the internet to find the details. We have decided to meet up at the Roadhouse before the turnoff to the National Park and drive in to find out for ourselves.
As Doug has said I know the free camps better than most having been there for the past three years on the northward trip. Someone may have more info on other places and may be more aware of the Wikkicamps options than we are.
Also Bluewater is nominated as a 24 hour stopover in Camps7 and we were wondering if the ranger still does the Monday and Thursday checking and may be enforcing the 24 hour stay. I have been told that if the ranger notes your number plate for the second time he can write out a fine of $1500.
I have been into the Alligator Creek Camping Ground - I think in 2012.
I only did it as a day trip, leaving my van at the Nome Caravan Park. My van is too big to get into most National Parks
The camp spots are definitely not "van friendly" - too small and difficult to manoeuvre into - I was glad I had decided to check it out first.
I am not sure what vehicles you are all travelling in/with ... but from what I can see of your bus Yeoeleven, it probably would not fit into a camp spot.
It is a very busy place. Backpackers love the place - a nice National Park (I took heaps of photos on each of the walks during my 7 hours there) with some good walks and a pretty creek.
Your suggestion to check it out first is a wise one. The "camp" shown as Alligator Creek Roadhouse in the Camps Book is about 3km north of the Bowling Green Bay Nat Park turnoff.
Here's a couple of photos of Alligator Creek just near the campground.
Cheers - John

Hey Paul! I live in far north Qld in the small township of Cooktown. I hope to one day be a grey nomad. I am often researching and dreaming on the net and love reading of others adventures on the open road! For now I will remain housebound as a carer for mum who had a stroke and who will be 80 in January.
We are on 3 acres of rainforest just 3 mins from PO. If you are self sufficient with vehicle and wanted to drop in and stay on our block and do a little gardening we'd welcome you for a visit. Winter or mid-year is the best time to travel up north.

Hi, hope you are well, we have been out of contact for a while so just got your post. We are not far in front of you, we stayed at the Alligator creek truck stop on the highway for a couple of nights, it's clean and tidy and not too noisy if can get back from the road. Coming into Townsville there is a BP service station on the right good parking nice showers and toilets. Again a free camp and not too noisy. we left Townsville about two weeks ago and went to Bluewater but it was packed, so we moved on. we just managed to get into Bushy Park at Rollingstone at about 11 am but by 12 they were queuing to get in waiting for someone to leave. We took a ride to Balgal same story there were 5 units parked around the outside waiting for someone to leave. All of these are now 48 hours, the ranger still does his rounds Monday and thursday but we were told in the busy period as now he will also do some "extra" visits.
All of these were too crowded for us And we were looking to stay longer so we decided to head to the National parks. $5.30 per person per night we first went to Big crystal creek and then after an unexpected detour to Ingham we went to Jourama falls. Both an easy drive of the highway good access to sites toilets and cold showers. Both magnificent places.
hope this helps a little see you soon,

We called in to the National Park camp at Bowling Green but found it a bit too small and if Paul backed his caravan into one of the spots he would have to park his car in the official car park. Not at all convenient so we decided to chance it at Bluewater and here we are camped next to each other and likely to stay until Thursday morning.
I was able to find the Toll depot to collect the new 2.6KVA generator, there were three depots and a maintenance outlet all Toll and all in Toll Street. After several attempts I was able to find the right one and off to Bluewater.
Haven't read up and filled it up yet but tomorrow will get into it, the main thing is that I could fit it into the pace from the old one. I had measured it up carefully but often am a bit slack about the finer points but not this time. I now have a 1KVA Engel generator for sale and intend to put it out tomorrow with a price of $300 on a table next to the drive in.
Thanks for the tips Paul & Hazel, Bluewater is busy but not really a problem and after here we plan to visit Toomulla then Bushy Parker for the limit each. Had thought about Crystal Creek but have already stayed at Paluma NP and Jourama NP as well as Wallaman Falls. There is a post I will look up about camping at the wetlands at Ingham. John
G'day to everyone heading to beautiful FNQ.
Murray Falls NP is a beautiful place to stay also!!
The free camp at the Tully Showgrounds is packed out everyday too.

Great swimming in the creek also, might be a bit COOL at the moment but great in the warmer weather.
We are staying at my dads' place in Edmonton will be in Cairns for approx 3 -12 months, hope you are all travelling safely.
Cheers Kev/Kim.
Hi KevKim,
all going well here at Rollingstone, will get to Cairns eventually but not before looking for the site you outlined for me on the old highway near Gordonvale. Still got the map you made for me at Greens tucked away in my camps book.
Plenty of sites to camp at before Cairns probably a month before we get there.
