Plants may fear reaper: Herald sun newspaper Friday 4th
Most people don't give a second thought when tucking into a plate of salad.
But perhaps we should be a bit more considerate when chomping on a lettuce, as scientists have found that plants actually respond to the sounds of themselves being eaten.
The researchers of the University of Missouri have found that plants can identify sounds nearby, such as the sound of eating, and then react to the threats in their environment.
Previous research has investigated how plants respond to acoustic energy, including music, and researcher Heidi Appel.
We found that feeling vibrations signal changes to the plant cells metabolism creating more defensive chemicals that can repel attacks from caterpillars.
I'll never look at a salad in the same way!!!
