Truck stop book...

During the last week someone mentioned that they have a "truckers book" of some sort for rest stops. I have not been able to find it by searching as I can't remember any details of "key words".

Anyone help please?

Aussie Paul. smile

Australia Truckies Atlas from Hema is the one we have - cost $40 at a BP servo. We've had it about 2 weeks, and I swear, as a big rig (8.5m bus) it has been more value to us than the Camps book or Wikicamps.

This is published every 2 years, with the last publication being 6 months ago (the one we have). Worth its weight in gold.

That's the one! We did 4 weeks with Wikicamps and the Camps book, and had some interesting issues with the term 'big rig'. No issues with this one. Some spaces are full, and in northern NSW, a couple have been obliterated by roadwork, but we used it from Clybucca NSW to Landsborough QLD and had no real problems. At Coomera, the truckstop area was full, so the BP guy directed us to another area where we were out of the way, and could still access amenities easily

amazing - we will look for this as well as we are 12 metres with the 5 metres on the back with the trailer and car.

Thanks

Sounds good as we are 17m over all length. Plus our rig is towed by a truck anyway, albeit a small one, so not like rolling in with a car and caravan.

I've noticed with our big rig we tend to get far more respect from truckies than we did with the car and van too.

If you're going to park up in a truck parking by please bear in mind the drivers have to take their fatigue breaks, and many truck bays are spaced to allow this to happen.
Park as far forward as possible, and at the back of the bay, not in the middle by the shelter.
You may not do it, but believe me, many do. "This will do Mildred. Put the kettle on love."
There are many parking bays where trucks get the no no, and many are not suitable for trucks, but it's best just to share.
In some states the free caravan parks have toilets while the truck drivers, men and women, have to find a bush without toilet paper.

I didn't think GN's in either campers, caravans or motorhomes could legally or morally park in "truck stops". Does being a "big rig" mean you are a truck? Would it be right to park a semi-trailer in a "rest stop" but not a road train?

I'm fully with you hako. Truck stops are for "real" trucks, not converted buses or van haulers regardless of their size. We're constantly hearing of trucks crashing and one of the main causes for this happening is driver fatigue. There are so many other areas set aside for vehicles other than trucks to pull off the road, we should respect the few areas specifically set aside for trucks and leave them for their intended purpose, namely so commercial truck drivers can get a chance to rest.

As a 'big rig' (over 12t GVM) we are bound by the same rules as the truckies, rest stops are required after a certain number of hours. Where possible, we avoid rest areas, but sometimes, with driver fatigue, it's unavoidable.

The truckies we have met have never had an issue - we have talked to a lot of them, both at stops and servos/cafes. Many have passed on information on the best stops, stops to avoid, and offered advice on the best routes for a rig our size to go.

General rule seems to be, treat truckies and their space with respect, and they will (generally) return the favour.

Yep, work diary too. Not one department can give us a straight answer, so we do it anyway.
