G'day Hec and welcome to the GN forum.

we have a Telstra 4G usb wireless broadband service. We use this on our laptop pc

8gb costs us about $39.95 per month and is probably the best coverage you will get around Aus.

There are many other deals available especially prepaid so it pays to shop around.

Lots of places now have free wi fi so if you have a smart phone with wifi use that or as KFT says get a wifi modem and a tablet or laptop

G'day to you to, and thanks for the welcome,
I spoke to a Telstra dealer, and he told me even if I get a doggle or toggle or something,
I will get internet but not emails, because I haven't got a IP provider,
Is this another well informed Telstra dealer or was he just trying to get me of the phone because it was lunchtime ?

Hec, you probably need to have a Gmail or Hotmail email address to be able to receive emails anytime you have internet access. I use a portable wifi modem and pay $180 for 12gb over 12 months, and if you renew before the 12 months and have not used all you 12gb you will not lose the remainder of the 12 gb.

There have been a couple of great threads running during the last few weeks on this subject. You can search for them if you know how. I didn't know how to use the search function for a while.

8gb data for $39.95 is a great deal! How do I get that?

And to answer the question...yes a dongle with at least 1gb data would be more than enough data if you just want to check emails. But once you are out there you will want to check out places to visit, forums and Wikicamps!
You need to set yourself up an email account. Gmail or hotmail are easy to set up...google gmail and set up an account...easy peasy!
You can get a 3G or 4g dongle. Either is fine. 4g is only really available in big cities. Telstra has more coverage than any other network.

I use the prepaid $150 telstra wifi (good for a yearor sooner if you are a very heavy user). Also create yourself a Gmail or one of the other free email accounts - then if you change your internet supplier your email stays the same.

Wow fellas, Thanks for all your suggestions, very, very, helpful,
In fact more helpful than the clown I spoke to on the phone,
O.K. Time to do some research and set up an e-mail address from Gmail or Hotmail .

Exetel ( exetel.com.au )offer 10 Gb month by month

Mobile broadband for $39.99 with a Telstra 4G connection
or $34.99 with Optus HSPA+

They do have other cheaper plans. Have been with them for years and their service is good. Phone support is of course O/S but is quick and their web site displays the minutes it will take for them to answer. You automatically get an email address, but the address is not like a Hotmail one, if you cease an account with them then the email address stops.

easy mate, I bundled my home line, post paid mobile and my internet on a single bill and they let me keep my $20 discounts. and I ended up with a better deal on the mobile too

If you already have an email address such as Bigpond there is no need to get a new gmail or Hotmail address as you can access your email via webmail, if you are with Bigpond just go to their web site and click on webmail and log in with your email name and password, you can do this even from home, if you are with another service provider you can do the same on their website also.
I prefer gmail for a web based email as they seem to have very good spam filters and also if you change providers in the future you don't have to change your email address.

I have a SIM card in my iPad from Telstra. $180 per year for 12gb data (last year it was $150). My email is with apple at me.com and/or cloud.com.
I also have a gmail account and a bigpond account that came with my prepaid phone $30 pm. All directed to my ipad email client, but available via a web browser if necessary.
If you setup a web email account like, you can get/send emails from Internet Cafes without any form of personal internet connectivity.

No need for a dongle or a wifi modem, I use my iPad as a personal hotspot (modem) and connect the PC's (one Windows, one Apple iMac) to it via bluetooth to get Internet on the PC's.

Hello Hec, I think gmail would provide you with less hassles than hotmail. Hotmail every so often wont allow you access to your emails until you allow them to send you a Code they claim this code is for security reasons, this code also needs to be sent to an alternative email address. Gmail to my knowledge is plain sailing, no codes to disrupt or confuse....Kisha

Gmail for me also, Aldi resell Telstra 3G for data if you wish I think $30 for 3gig per month. I use the 365 day plan for my mobile and get about 3 months out of a $30 recharge. Never had an issue with either the phone or iPad using the data sim.

I just wait for WW or Coles to have a special on Telstra 3G mobile broadband dongles .. usually @ $15 for 1 gig & 30 days. (using one at the moment that was activated for last week at Hervey Bay)

Always have one or two on hand to initalise for any upcoming trip.

Just dump them when they expire.

Perhaps not the answer for those constantly on the road.

I have 5Gig of cable at home on a single bill & Telstra Alumini discounts.

I have always used a Hotmail Email address for general use, with no issues or requests for log in codes, as well as a couple of Telstra (.com & .net.au) addresses for private use. MY Email client just looks for mail on both.

When I travel overseas I always set up a new hotmail address just for that trip & abandon it after my return.

eg ..... grahamcarolinchina@hotmail.com. Our family use that one if they need to contact us & I don't have to wade thru all the stuff that comes to my usual addresses.

I think that I have at least one Gmail acct too but never use it.

I travel all over the country and use Bigpond and Telstra for everything because they provide the best range. I'm currently writing this at Border Village on the SA WA border. Their wi-fi signal is stronger here than at home at Bolivar.
I have the 4G wireless wifi device. If I have mobile phone coverage I generally have internet coverage.
Shop around to find out what is best for your needs.

+1 RovingDutchy re gmail...however,

I'd like to add that the use of gmail comes with 'default' conditions that most/some of us would prefer to modify in order to restrict the 'agreed' terms and conditions regarding the rights of Google to share/onsell our input.

There are ways to restrict same, though I suspect most folk will find them hidden/obscure

(caveat utilitor, maybe)
