John, you got my curiosity running wild mate about poor little Ida so tried searching as to how she died at a childrens picnic but had no luck. Was there any info as to how she died?

Sorry Doug what you see and a small wrought iron fence was all. Like you I seem to be called to her and for some reason I thought I should record her to show others of her sad and clearly premature demise .Hopefully if there is a god ,she is in good hands. John

The best time for fish to bite is 10 mins before you get there and 10 mns after you leave

Gday...

The newspaper clippings from August 1888 regarding the Bourke Children's Picnic Tragedy - in which Ida Warton died as a result of injuries to the chest.

I trust you can read the photos as they are - if not perhaps save to your HDD and enlarge slightly.

Cheers - John

Thankyou soooo much Rocky for all that information and the research/trouble you have gone to.

That is a real tragedy and appears to be just one of those accidents that just happen, no ones fault really.

I noticed a word "Gay" in the third image. It is now used with a different meaning in a parade these days.

Probably seems strange that I was interested in how Ida died but after My 21 year old son was killed my heart goes out to those that loose children, no matter how old but the real young ones, well, hurt a little different.

I don't know weather I feel better or worse now for knowing how Ida died??

Thanks again John (RL) and Moama John for the original pic.

Gday...

One of the other things I like about small inland towns is their cemetery. I love to wander around and look at the head stones of the pioneers. It was such a tough life for all in those days. It always touches me how many children died so young .. and their mothers as well.

Women had it tough in those days - pregnancy and childbirth were fraught with so much danger.

I often research their background if I can - it is often as enlightening as poor young Ida.

Cheers - John

There was a documentary on the TV only in the last couple of weeks about the cemetery at Wilcannia - it had beautiful headstones and lots of stories but unfortunately the elements are taking their toll - some locals are trying to fix it up - there are even a couple of return soldiers from WWI - their graves should have the same treatment as other soldiers. As Rockylizard says there are lots of stories at these places.
