Distilling spirts in Aussie.

Under the Australian law home distilling of any spirits is Illegal, even though you only make it for yourself?

I have a 4 litre still mainly for distilling water lol

Now on any home brew site some say its Illegal to make any types of spirits in Aussie but? a few sites even show a video of how to make your own spirits (weid)

In Nz it is legal to make spirts for your own use but not here in Aussie?

My 4 litre still is legal to own but over 4 litres you are to have a licence to wn it?

http://www.aussiebrewer.com.au/index.php?page=shop.browse&category_id=37&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=3

Now this site tells you its illegal in red.  http://brewerschoice.com.au/spirits-making/

Also some sites here in Aussie even have a video on how to make your own spirits?  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_dNIXnTfHI

15 months ago I was driving from Archerfield in Brissie going back towards Beaudesert when I stopped at a Woolies servo at I think Park ridge.

As I was putting fuel in my car there was a policeman beside me filling up his police car as well.

He said hi and I said hi back then I asked him where was the brew shop at Browns plains?

He replied oh about 3 kms down the road go up the service road and turn left at its there.

He asked are you after some essence for your still sir?

I went gulp no after a few cans of Coopers lager, he suggested buy a still as police don't ever worry about anyone who distils for there own use, only if they sell it.

At the brew shop I sked for some essence to copper told me,itold the girl that a tall officer told me to try this if I had a still,

she replied was he tall and trim about 35 yrs old?

I replied yes , she said he buys heaps of essences from us he has a bar inside his house, he is a top guy, she even said she has seen him coming out of Woolies at Browns plains with a trolley full of coke and ginger ale and lemonaide no

So if you distill for your own use there should not be any problems.

Have also heard you MUST filter through activated carbon after you have diluted to the strength you want. Gets rid of the nasties.

So many different essences that could enhance the flavour of this distilled liquid.  Have heard that generally about 14 bottles of spirit per batch can be made.  The cost someone told me was a little different.  A bit more expensive at about $6 a bottle.

I do believe that the cost of coke is outrageous.  It's dearer than the spirit!!!

We buy my favourite drink, Pepsi Max at whatever store has it on special. Sunday I bought 20 x 2liter bottles at IGA for $1.49 each. I decant into 600 ml bottles so as not to have too much go flat. Love my Pepsi Max. nod.gif nod.gif nod.gif

A good friend of mine knows lots about this wink

They say that an airstill (as shown) is less-than-ideal, though far better than not homedistilling

They say to look up a distilling-based webforum for experienced advice (eg if staying with a potstill try http://www.stillsmart.co.uk/...... if wanting to know 'more' try http://www.coppercustomstillcomponents.com.au/phpBB3/index.php?sid=dda5f9ad8708f4496a0611113cbf65c0 )

Take care

I've been making my own bourbon for over 10 years now using a 5ltr single reflux still(pictured below) that distills spirit to about 90% alcohol which is equal to about 180% proof (I also read on a number of forums to avoid the air still pictured above by Graham). I then soak it in wood chips that come from used Jim Bean oak casks then dilute the mix down to 40% and finish the flavoring etc. Turns out to be a nice drop.

As for filtering. I buy a small sachet of Still Spirits Turbo Carbon which is a black paste that gets added at the start of fermentation then at the end I add Turbo Clear which drops the carbon & stuff to the bottom within a couple of days leaving the rest as a clear spirit ready for decanting. (saves on later filtering)

On average a mix makes about 10 bottles at about $7 to $8 a bottle i think. It can be made cheaper depending on what is used but, with mine, the yeast, 7kg sugar (generic from coles or woolies $1.99 for 2kg), turbo carbon, turbo clear, wood chips, Still Spirits honey bourbon flavour (adds a bit more taste) and glucose(for smoothness) all add to the cost.

As for Coca Cola, it's way to expensive. I've found the Aldi Royal Coke an excellent substitute and at about $8 to $9 for 24 cans it's a good price too (I think that works out to about $1 a litre). I prefer cans as I found those 2ltr bottles go flat too quick when they are over half empty.

Happy Drinking

Jon

Doing a wash now I got a single elect blanket to wrap around it to keep it app 18 to 23 deg using triple distilled still yeast,i add the carbon then after app 7 or 8 days its the a and b clearer.

I have just a basic filter as in pic below and use those round block carbon filters. Also withmy Air still I don't have to take off the 1st 75 mls, but a friend of mine has a larger still his wife uses the 1 st 75 mls to clean windows mixed with water. Also I have tried Dextrose but white sugar seems to give me better alco and taste. Also to sterilise my container I use Milton baby bottle wash 1 tablet in app 3 litres of water.

I use a single electric blanket in winter as well with the strings cut off and a peg to hold in place. I have a heating pad but it doesn't work well enough.

BTW, if you just 'attach but don't 'insert' your photos then they stay small and clickable without taking up the whole page.

Cheers
