HI EVERYONE we have now bought a generator. thanks everyone for helping in a previous post.
My next question: those of you who travel with a generator - can the generator stay in the back of the ute when it is on or does it always have to be put on the ground somewhere? thanks.
Hi Folks,
Normally don't say much, but I would advise that the genny have a bit of air, especially in the hot weather if trying to keep an air con going.
One member on another forum ran his in a box and regrettably blew his up.
Just saying....
Friends have a bulky genny in a box at the back of their motorhome.
They got a 12 volt car dash fan in there with lots of ventilation holes.
They run the fan whenever the genny runs.
Been doing a good job for 2 years now.
If it has a fan for cooling ? In a vented box is fine . Needs separate inlet / outlet so hot air isn't recirculated. The bigger generators are inclosed.. Oh and don't forget exhaust?.
My hubby does the same as Subaru. On the ground when running, put away when finished and cool. Also keeps an eye on it while out of the car. Some have grown legs and walked away!
We keep ours locked to the tray until we want to use it and then he lifts it out! Damned heavy tho when full of fuel! It did fit into the front of the caravan but too heavy to lift out and weight distribution was probably ****e!
Ok, let's face it, A gennie places a little bit of lift and jerk, to place it away from the van to negate the noise etc etc., ( but not close to other vans,) Courtesy would be to advise other campers that you are starting a gennie, and the turn off time.
We carry our heavy little bugger in a box on the rear B.Bar. Even carry a small trolley to transfer the gennie. Would not be with out one.

We have a 4.4 genny which is pretty heavy but I always take it out of the 4x4 and place it as far away from the caravan as possible for two reasons ,
Firstly for quietness and secondly fumes from the exhaust can be deadly.

I've come across a few in crowded camps who do that and aim it at others. Not suggesting that you would do that. The fumes can be sickening.
Hi Janette, did not realize about fumes or aiming it in certain directions. got a lot to learn I guess.
Hi Rocket, The reason I mentioned it, because I don't think people realise how it can affect others. I have a friend who is quite ill and cannot free camp because of fumes from the generators.
