Accidents Can So Easily Happen

Morning All,

I know it has been a while since I last posted and said about us being on the road and heading west for The Dig Tree, Innamincka and Cameron Corner. As you would be aware communications out that way are a tad non-existant at times, however I did manage to update our blog.

However, we are home earlier than we thought due to an accident about 40kms west of St George on Sunday afternoon. And rather than relaying all the details on here as well, may I ask you to have a look on our blog for more info.   http://pejayontheroad.wordpress.com

Today we are just taking it easy, before looking for more trips to do in our caravan.

I just want to mention though, a couple Ron & Jill from Victoria in an AustraliaWide caravan heard about the accident on the two-way, looked out for us and stopped, offered Pete a cuppa and also me when I got back from organising RACQ in St George. They stayed with Pete until I got back!! There really are some very lovely people out there!!

Wow!  So glad you are ok Pejay, and that it was your trailer instead of your lovely caravan. Well done, RACQ!!

That plate shouldn't have snapped, was there any warranty on it? And did it have safety chains?.

Yes, you were certainly lucky and hopefully all is ok for you now.  Must feel good to be back at Bribie. I really enjoyed myself there and meeting up with you guys. As an ex-Brisbane boy, I spent a lot of time on Bribie in my younger days. Only wish (there's that word again) that I'd bought a block of land there for the future. Land was averaging around $400.00 a block at that time.

No doubt this unfortunate experience will be put behind you and you'll be off again soon..  Best of wishes....Ken.

Glad you are both ok Pejay, what a freak and unexpected accident, the Gods must have been smiling down on you both, no traffic/animals etc and the rig coming to a gentle rest in the upright position...Wow!

Agree totally about the RAC, worth their weight in gold!

Good to hear so many looked after you both so well including the Lord! (He did hear your prayer!) Take it easy while you wonder where next to go.

Thank God that you are both ok

same thing happened with my Cub trailer

but worse thing was that is was being towed by my motor cycle at that time

Lucky I had crossed chains on it so the damage was minimal

It seems yours has been bouncing around a bit and done a fair amount of damage going by the photo's

Please let this be a warning to all of us and have 2 chains fitted to our caravans and camping trailers

so they can be crossed

Cheers John

Hi Pejay ... Thank God the two Of you are OK and the damage was restricted to your camper. ....  Someone was definitely looking out for you on that trip.  I will send you and email, but in the meantime, hope you can put it behind you and start looking to the future and your next trip .... We are on the Atherton Tablelands now and will start the slow trip south in about 2 weeks, so hope to catch up with you when we get further south.

Glad to see you are both ok, Very lucky all round as it could have caused an accident with vehicles the other way.

As the camper was a 1992 model, it certainly did not have a warranty on it, and yes, we had a single chain, which also snapped. I forgot to mention that it did a 360 before coming to rest the right way up!! Hence, the amount of damage. RACQ has been in touch today, and they confirmed that it definitely will be written off. You know it pings you off when we had done all the checks etc on it before we left - including new tyres (now that hurts!) but you never think to look on the under side of the coupling at the plate, which I would say was from original manufacturing.

But all is good, and we shall head away for a 'mini break' soon to recover in the van.

Thank you all for your great support.

Glad you are ok Pejay. You just reminded me of when I first got the Avan, similar thing happened two days after I got it, thread section of the tow ball snapped (rusted), lesson learnt. Only damage was jockey wheel handle. I was a tad paranoid for next few outings.

wow im lost for words sorry to hear your loss but so glad your ok . not picking directly but this just goes to show how and why these things happen . im also lost as to why the safety chain broke just another couple of things for allllllllllllllllll of us to think of . is that little bit of chain up to scratch and how many people use $2 d shackles for this connection with some of us our home or just for trips away sometimes not even insured . but what about your brakes unfortunately for pejay this little unit didnt by law have to have brakes let alone a breakaway system speaking of breakaway system hows your batterie been sitting for 6 mths and your of did you check it .

it really unfortunate people have this sort of trouble for the rest of us to check our vans out but its true
on a lighter side if you could see the funny side another thing to be wary of when crawling round under your van watch out for hornets nest. a m8s dog found the nest under my van was funny to see but just something to think of .
