Not long now

Hello all

We have only 3 more months to go before we sail over to the big island for our 2 month holiday.  Have a few things left to organise but have plenty of time.  Just need to ask a couple of questions though

1.  What do you do with your fridge when on the spirit?  Do you leave it off or run on 12v?

2.  Toll pass... What do visitors use to get through the tolls (not sure what you call them)?

3.  Can anyone recommend a caravan park that is dog friendly close to Melbourne?  We will be heading to Adelaide so in that direction would be good.

No doubt there will be more questions as time ticks by so I will apologise in advance smile

Thanks in advance

Debbie and Paul

Hi justcampin, when we came back on the sprit we just turned the fridge off as it would of flatten the batteries within a couple of hours, every think will stayed cold (beer) and the food as well the frozen goods were still frozen. You should be able to pay any toll online, or i think it can be prepaid at a caltex service station. Sorry can not help you with the dog friendly c/p in Melbourne.

Have fun and safe traveling on the big island for a couple of months.

Cheers reg & lynn

Hi Reg & Lynn

Thanks for the info. Need fridge to stay reasonably cold as our beautiful dog Josh needs medication that needs to remain cold, oh and of course keeping the beer cold is a must apparently.

Will check up on the toll requirements. Can't wait for holiday to start.

Cheers
Deb and Paul

Hi justcampin As Reg and Lyn have said I can't help with c.p. suggestions but we pay by credit card over the phone after each toll way journey. Very easy. The question of the fridge, we had an old dog until a few months ago. Her medication was kept in the fridge with my beer. Turning the fridge off for the few hours on the Spirit never affected the medication. The fridge door is not opened duringb the journey so remains quite cold. Hope this helps.

Hi, Werribee south Caravan park is dog friendly and is a good spot and well priced. It is about an hour away from the ferry terminal. The tolls we paid online, but you can do it on phone by credit card. We had our fridge turned off, and just the basics as you can't have any fruit and veg, everything kept ok in the fridge .

Hi Deb and Paul, if it is even just a small concern maybe freeze a couple of plastic bottles full of water or similar, place them in the closed fridge and that would help keep things cool for the 9+ hour journey. Sort of going back to the ice block days.

Tolls, well I have an eTag as I use tolls on a regular basis and it covers Aussie wide. I have a automatic top up set up so I don't have to worry about how much $$$$ are left or in there at any time. As others have said, you can do on-line or over the phone.

Just be careful of what tug you use as I had a Toyota Prado untill a couple of weeks ago, paid a car fee. Rang to change to the Colorado and even though registered for private use it is classed as Light Comercial and have to have a new tag sent, it's in the mail as we speak.

Caravan Park, only thing I can suggest is keep out of the City area if you can. Maybe stretch the legs so to speak or spin the wheels and head West to Lake Burrumbeet CVP, just West of Ballarat slightly off the highway, I think it is dog friendly. Don't take any notice of the Deliverence look about the place or the old lady looking around the corner at you, it is actually a nice place to prop for the night. Not the most modern place byt clean toots and showers. It will be cold but anywhere in Victoria will be cold this time of year.

Thanks again everyone for the advice, very muchly appreciated. Thanks Doug we have a motorhome so Im guessing that will be under "truck" classification with regard to toll eTag.

You are right there Robbie it will be a long way from the river and being that I get lost in my own back yard Im glad we have the gps lol.

18 months ago I would never of said we would leave the farm let alone think of touring the mainland. But here we are city slickers again and off to the big island we come, well in 3 months time. We both are so looking forward to it, it will be an adventure for sure. Will fill you in at Christmas time. Say big hi to Therese for me xxxx
