Depends if you mean Working with Children Check or a standard police check which many employers carry out when employing a new staff member, I had them done for both situations, one as a member of a youth group it is mandatory and it was my responsibility to get that one and one when as an employment condition I had to consent to it being done by the employer, I had nothing to hide so no problem. For the children's check, just go online and google the state where you intend to work and the type or work and you will find all the information including the cost, and how to go about it as it varies depending on the state and type of work. It has been some years since I had them both done and i believe the children's check has recently changed.

I have a national police check done every 3 years for a driver accreditation I have and another done every 5 years for a working with children check I have, I needed both of these for when I was driving buses and coaches. Both were at my expence.
You can get all the paperwork and photo id from Australia post for the working with children check one if your state requires that. In Victoria the driver accreditation is done through the Taxi Directorate (good luck with them) they are not easy to deal with.
Both love red tape.
The WWCC is actually done by the Department of Justice, so is very thorough indeed. When I did mine for the first time I got a list of any criminal offences and traffic offences from way back when. Both sections had "NIL" marked. Lucky I didn't know wombat then and spose it says I am not a axe murderer.
I would suggest the WWCC is well worth having anyway because anywhere there are children and you want to work or volunteer etc it would be required, that would include CVP's as well.

I have found that several places where I offered to do voluntary work they needed both of these checks.
Also they required me to do a safe working course etc and all at my expense. As I was offering my time for free and it was in a workshop environment I said thank you but no thanks. I have nothing to hide but was not prepared to hang around for 6+ weeks while I did a safety course (when they ran one) just so I could work for nothing.
I have found places that accept my skills and my time in the calling I want and I now spend several months a year doing trade and other skills that they benifit from and I enjoy their company ( and the occasional train ride for free LOL).
I think if you want to go to the trouble and it is required for your chosen dream then you have to do it but there are still p;laces where it is not need (but getting fewer by the week). When it is mandatory then I suppose I can not do voluntary work any more.

There is no legal requirement in any state for a Police check to work in caravan parks, but individual park owners may require one as a condition of employment. Pretty rare though. Ozjohn.

I understand the need for working with children checks BUT I work with children in NT, Q and NSW. I need a separate check for each state - an Ochre card for NT, a blue card in Q and WWCC in NSW. I only pay a minimal amount because my work is as a volunteer. Surely there must be a way that a federal check can be made instead of checks every 2 years by each state police. Glad my volunteer work hasn't extended to WA and SA - would need an extra size wallet to carry the extra cards.
the reality is that police checks are only good up until they are issued. Most agencies that require them will not accept one that is more than 6 mths old. Unfortunately they only record convictions so there a people around who would be considered 'petty thieves' but still 'pass' the police check. I don't believe there is such a thing as 'petty thieves' - theft is theft no matter how small.
