SW QLD Quilpie-Windorah-Longreach roads/camps

hi all, just wondering whether roads through this area are sealed or dirt, or how much dirt? Also any suggestions on where to camp, free or cara parks are ok. Love being next to the water. Thanks

Main roads tend to be sealed although there are plenty of unsealed roads in the area as well.

Have a look at an up to date road map of the area, will give you a pretty good idea.

Camps 7 http://www.campsaustraliawide.com/camps-7/ is a good investment, loads of info of the type your looking for.smile

Thanks Santa, will definitely have a look at your link, also wondering how safe it is, ie do many travel that way and camp outside cara parks??

We travelled that way last year, roads were all bitumen. Free camps on Coopers creek had about 50 vans etc. we stayed at the caravan park in Windorah $10 a night power and water, hot showers, washing machines $2 if my memory is correct. There is a camp area at Stonehenge,I think for a donation. We would have stayed there but were running late to meet people in Longreach.

There's a great free camp at Quilpie by the lake a few ks out o town and at Longreach we camped by the river further down from the designated camp area, no trouble easy access and on the bank of the river I think we stayed 2 weeks antastic enjoy   Bru

recently, travelled roads from Thargomindah to Noccundra, free camp at the Noccundra Waterhole, to Quilpie and then back to Windorah, free camp at Coopers Creek, however it does get crowded there so to ensure you get there early,  i suggest you overnight at the rest area on banks of Kyabra Creek Thyungra Station it is called from memory, it is an hour or so then to Windorah ... No facilities except garbage bins and shelter with picnic tables, stacks of room and little road noise . At Coopers Creek check access before camping especially on the southern side of river opposite toilets, may need high clearance .. We camped, near the toilet and there is reasonable walking access to river but not for vehicles there.  nice spots Between Windorah and Longreach if you are self contained .... Be careful when you move on and off the sealed road for oncoming traffic as the edges are very sharp in places and can be a few inches drop ... We did  a tyre there .... Other than that main roads are all sealed

It certainly is, just keep in mind when selecting a spot, as a precaution, try to camp out of sight of the road.wink

PS: If you locate a likely spot and on driving in find it occupied, as a courtesy leave em to it and look elsewhere, there are plenty of other spots available, so no need to intrude, of course in designated camp areas its a case of first in best dressed.
