Good advice is free. I have used these before Windows 98.

Get rid of all fake alerts, and keep your registry tuned up.

Your PC runs faster. Update and scan weekly or  when needed.

Two free software downloads saves you time and money long term.

You will find them on the net.

Spybot Search and destroy.

Cleanersoft Free Registry fix.

Yes I agree Spybot is very useful but I see no need for a registry cleaner the general advice on the internet is to leave your registry alone, Malwarebytes is another handy program.
If you do download free programs be very careful as many now include a lot of other unwanted programs that can be a headache to remove, just make sure you read about what is being offered at each step of the install

AND ALWAYS do a custom install and as RD says read all install processes BEFORE you click the OK button.

I choose to stay away from reg cleaners, I do use CCleaner bit not the reg option.

Even Adobe Flash Player and Reader will try to sneak a trial version of McAffee security onto your PC during upgrades.

Make sure you examine all check boxes during upgrades, the install McAffee box is checked by default, you have to uncheck it, sneaky buggers.no

I choose to stay away from Windowsfull stop. Linux is better for me.

 agree, NOBODY wants McAffee on their computer do they? 

ALL boxes like that need unticking to decline, some will need clicking to accept if you want to, so as Santa says 'Make sure you examine all check boxes'

Hi all ..

While I agree that Linux is good, it simply won't run a few of my old/large programmes ..

I also use Ccleaner // Malwarebytes // MSE .. and also keep windows fully updated ..

I'm still running windows 7 .. not about to change.

 

also .. another tip to try for those on windows 7 if you're using firefox and find it slowing down ..

Go into "settings / advanced /  .. under browsing .. untick " use hardware acceleration when available"

I noticed a considerable improvement to speed .. good luck !

This post reminded me to run a few tools ...  as I usually do on the first of each month ..

Malwarebytes, Spybot & Kaspersky full sys scan.   practically nothing found .. so good result.

Also updated drivers but am reluctant to do anything to the registry or start up ...  not smart enough to know what needs to be 'fixed'.

I followed the advice on cleanersoft registry fix, installed it and ran the program, got lots of errors, ran fix errors and then ran it again, got same list of errors???, next time I rebooted and ran the program again and got the same list of errors without doing any work or internet?? I thought I may as well uninstall it, if it wasn't doing anything and found that it wouldn't uninstall at all, I had to restore the computer to get it off.......or did I get it off?????????? it's a worry!!! is anything every removed from the computer once it's installed?????

 its still there, uninstall through Control Panel

I also use Advanced Uninstaller Pro ..

Its freeware for personal use and I've been using it for a few years now ..

An excellent uninstaller of programmes .. Use it to remove almost any program you've installed .. it also removes all trace links to all parts of windows leaving it clean again .

I tried to uninstall through control panel but it couldn't find the file to uninstall, that's why I restored the computer to a pre installation date.

I use Ashampoo Uninstaller. It monitors the program install and cleans an unwanted trial program completely as it knows where all the .dlls , reg entries are put.
