Self contained

Hi! Just after info please.  We have yet to purchase our rig and are undecided whether to worry about ensuite facilities. We have noticed that some forums mention that volunteers need to check to ensure that toilet is aboard at certain national parks etc.

If you have your own porta potti, shower and tent is that not acceptable as being self contained?  Just thought we should check

prior to our final decision...Many thanks!!

Happy days!

Gday...

This is taken from a Tasmanian website - (http://www.lgat.tas.gov.au/webdata/resources/files/Recreational_Vehicle_Guidleines.pdf)

SelfContained.JPG

Whilst this is Tasmanian sourced, it is pretty much the accepted definition of "self-contained" through Straya.

The dilemma about have a loo...or not have a loo!
Guess it depends what you want from camping...off indefinitely? A few months? A few days?
Where you want to camp? Caravan park? National parks? Free camp?
For us the ensuite was 100% yes! There is no way I want to walk across a camp ground in my dressing gown in the middle of the night for a wee! We are also LIVING full time in the van so ensuite was a certainty!
We also choose to free camp so a toilet in van is essential for us. Others do the free camping with portable toilet and shower tent and that is fine for them. I prefer not to.
So the bottom line is...what way do YOU want to do it?

Yes, all in favour of en suite. Nothing worse than teaming rain on a cold night and nature calls.;l
Guess it comes down to what you desire and the then cost of same.
But if possible go with en suite. You won't r egret same.

Most people I know who start with a caravan without ensuite trade up to one with.

If you check the used caravan yards, it is usually no ensuited vans that have been traded in. BUT we don't have an ensuite and it hasn't stopped us from travelling. We do have a portapottie and an external shower if we put the tent up.

Hi All

Like NeilnRuth I have my van with the porto loo and external shower for when the needs arise. maybe down the track when we have finished going oversea and doing other things that take our time we will look at up grading but in the mean time will make do enjoying what we have and that is so important.

Maybe ask yourself do you need to go to those N/p where they have Volunteers to check your rig for these items as they surely will be busy, for few dollars more you possibly could stay in comfort of a low cost caravan park.

We alternate between what is out there enjoying all we can find, for the same money as a showground have stayed at a better c/p and then free camped with a clean shower and toilet, yes for free. A week latter after staying with family we camped at beautiful spot for 2 nights with no amenities but a great big bush

Happy touring, Ralph
