hi whats involved in getting a lr licenes i have motor home mitzubihe canter with wighe bridge cert at 4100 but the com plate rated at 5ton i am told cant drive it on my car licenes any help please thanks phill
Now not being right up on this tropic but I do know that in Qld. you maybe able to have it down rated to highest rating for a car licence.
Now first thing I would say to do is to take out everything that movable to get a lightest tare possible and a weighbridge ticket with that in your hand go into your traffic department and ask the question about having it down rated. This could save you money on rego.
Or pay out a small amount for some lesson to get the LR licence. Now be careful here as this may mean you will need a work diary and that means a lot of trouble, keeping it up to date, going over weighbridges, whole new unwanted work. I would not go this way, can become messier.
I have a friend who has down rated truck with slide on camper on the back, we were with them other night out in the bush he talked about the original weight problem and how he got to be careful when he loads it up for work during the week.
Rang him to make sure, cheaper rego, car licence, gross weight 4490 kgs. Dealer organized the down rating from 5 tonne to 4490 kgs
Hope this helps which ever state your in this applies. Ralph
ps. I been a semi trailer driver all my life have no real idea about small trucks, only this hear say.
Phil - I replied on the other entry. Don't know if someone can merge the 2??
Radar, my licence is a HR, husband's is a MR. We do not use log books or the like when driving the Coaster. Many years ago, I had a log book I had to use when driving school buses, but that is long gone.
Dennis, I am pretty sure that in most/all states, 4.5tonnes and above requires licence upgrade,

Don't know about NSW but here in Qld the vehicle's rated GVM decides what licence is required to drive it, even if the actual weight is below 4500kg. I had to bring forward my licence upgrade to drive my recently purchased Hino Rainbow, with a fully stripped out interior, back from Brisbane. It has a compliance plate with GVM of 5725kg although I read somewhere that without the seats, it would hover around the 4500kg mark.
Philip, assuming your Canter is 4100kg with bare minimum load, you have around 900kg for your payload. If the vehicle is de-rated to, say, 4500kg, that only leaves 400kg.

In Qld you do a 10 question test (all questions and answers found on TMR web page, easy peasy) then a .30 min driving test for LR with a reversing demonstration. Piece of cake, if you go thru a truck school you'll breeze it in. I have found that most reasonable size mobile homes go over the 4495kg limit with all the gear stuffed in so it gives you more leeway if you get a LR or MR. I think NSW you only have to fill out a form for LR. No test.
