Can someone please help with clarification of weight. We are looking at a Talvor Hayman and it appears not much allowance for our personal stuff, water, fuel etc. we both have standard licenses ... I was told upgrading Licence can allow you additional weight? Have referred to Mr Google but he talks a bit to technically for us to get a clear understanding. Is there perhaps a website that explains all this stuff, or something I can download? Of course, we have not discounted the obvious option of rethinking our choice of MH!
Currently at Normanton, did the Gulflander trip yesterday, day trip to Karumba today ...heading east in the next couple of days if anyone is in or around the postcodes would love to meet .....

The vehicle manufacturer determines the GVM Gross Vehicle Mass and it is stamped on the compliance plate, it is very difficult to change and by changing it even if you were prepared to go to the trouble it may put your vehicle in a different class and require a different licence to drive it..
If the motorhome manufacturer then make the additions too heavy he leaves you very little for your personal items, this is a major problem with vehicles with a GVM of less than 4.5 tonne because once you go over that it can no longer be legally driven on a car licence you world need a Light Rigid licence to drive it.
You need to be looking for a unit that leaves you a reasonable margin for personal items..

We will be in Babinda free camp Friday, Sat & sunday. Cairns Monday morning just long enough to pick up a small part & then up the hill to Mareeba, no plans for there as yet.

My take on this subject There are some motorhomes which have only a couple of hundred KGs allowed for Payload. That is the difference between the Tare weight and the GVW. The Payload is the weight for everything you need to take with you that is not part of the fixtures. This is particularly noticeable for Vehicles which are just below 4500KG GVW, which is done to allow them to be driven on a normal car licence. A good thing for some owners
If you intend to travel light and for shorter periods, perhaps stay in caravan parks, and eat out a bit then a couple of hundred KGs would be enough. Go for it, enjoy yourself !!
However if you intend to take all that stuff you think you need to free camp, be self sufficient for longer stays and generally load up as lots of us do, then be careful. You may be better to go for one with less fittings and more payload. 500kgs would be a good start depending on your needs . Also determine that the Tare weight given is actually the weight of the vehicle as it is supplied. They seem to gain quite a bit of weight as they go along, like their owners Take it to a weighbridge and get a real weight.

I went through the Talvor Hayman weight numbers....you have to count your rice bubbles it is that critical!! ALKO chassis is like sooo thin. The Talvor web site says a towing capacity of 2000kg but was told a tow bar cannot be fitted because of the lightweight chassis WTF. When I discussed this with Talvor they said " Oh yes it is an error on the web page, we will have to fix that". If you do have a tow bar fitted by someone, your warranty is void!! Misleading information at the least. Caveat emptor
I asked Talvor for comment on info provided by Baz and Eve and received the following ... Obviously the Jury is still out ... Incidentally, we do not intend to fit any towing apparatus ... And rarely would we have anyone other than the two of us or one child extra ...little child that is ... Traveling with us, so the 3 or 4 seat build we would opt for And on those occasions we would be on power not needing the extra power items ie gennie solar or,extra battery or water as that would be available where we stop once a year to fulfill our school holiday grandparent commitment!
Response from Talvor .....
The payload on the 4 x seater Hayman is 570KG , and while Fiat quote the Ducato as having a tow capacity of 2000kg , this capacity varies depending on the weight of the Motorhome fitted on the chassis ,and the weight over the rear axle
The Hayman 4 x seater does not have sufficient allowance on the rear axle to fit a tow bar with any useable tow ball weight ..the issue is not with the chassis
The Hayman (2 x seat belt build) ,does have capacity to have a tow bar fitted (Tow Capacity = 1250kg and Ball weight 100kg)
Fitting a tow bar to a vehicle that is not designed to have a tow bar , may cause the vehicle to be overweight and above the maximum C Class 4500kg ,ultimately making the vehicle illegal and therefore voiding warranty.
