HI Bob Great news It turned out to be simple after all. But I am still intrigued about that protusion on the other coil.

Hi Pete, the protrusion is just where the wires come out here is a pic of the old housing that goes over it and you can see it has a cut out for the protrusion and wires..
If you look at the picture of the valve block the other solenoid does the same, has to push the spool against a return spring.
Each coil has it's own part number but I think the only reason for that is one has a male plug on it (0685606) and the other one has a female plug on it (0685605) so they cant be connected to the wrong sender wires..
As you can all see one controls the walking speed and the other the digging and slewing functions of the machine..
Would be interesting connecting them up wrong..lol..lol..
Great news Bob.
You might still want to track down the correct one for long term security in lieu of that zip tie.
Looks like zip ties and duct tape has replaced the old bush mechanic's fencing wire and hammer.
Baz, there are cross reference lists from one brand of hydraulics to another brand, but not to and from OEM part numbers.
These major companies like Hitachi, Caterpillar, Komatsu etc, don't like you being able to go direct to the valve maker for cheaper parts.

!00% correct Peter,
As soon as I can locate the right part (new or used) I will buy it and fit it, in the mean time it looks like a couple of zip ties and duct tape will get me out of trouble for a while...
so now instead of searching solenoid tonight I'm scanning 35mm family slides to digital,,ah the things we do with 40 year old slides.
Slides ???????? gee they're posh I only have black and white pix taken with a Box Brownie...
Seriously Mate, Thanks for your help I really appreciate it, I was at my wits end when ole mate turned up and helped me track down the problem.....
I well remember back in my Gas shop day when a fridge or automatic stove was giving us drama we would revert to Plan B... which was open a beer and just sit and think about it..but I didn't do that I kept on looking in the wrong direction..
I got to that stage on Monday night where I was unable to think out the problem becoz of frustration with it and being unable to pinpoint the cause of the problem..
Thats when I put it to the forum members and was given lots of help to think outside my circle of thought..
