Hi Doug, we conducted this excercise a couple of years ago and were pleasantly surprised. There was no inspection by a mechanic just a vicroads employee inspected tyres and vin numbers etc and then when all ok we paid 12 months which i think was around $480. they even give a discount for concession card holders.
Changed our Terios from SA to Vic rego in 2012. Had to get roadworthy certificate, then take car to a VicRoads office and get the paperwork done. But that was changing it from a different (SA) owner to me. Not sure about the roadworthy cert if ownership not changing.
Hi Doug , you will have to go to a mechanical shop that does roadworthies , once done go to Vicroads so they can peruse the vehicle . Not sure of your age but our coaster is registered as a Toyota Campervan 2 seater on seniors rego . $302.76 for the rego plus stamp duty and plates . that's pretty well it . And best of all no yearly checks , if you need any more help just ask.

We (in NSW) gave our Magna Waggon to the s-i-law (in Vic) 2 or 3 years back.
The magna had recently had a full service, new brakes, new tyres and a NSW rego check, and was fully registered and insured in NSW.
On arrival in Vic 2 weeks later, it required a roadworthy check to transfer ownership and they found it "unroadworthy" unless we put in a new windscreen (for defects the naked eye couldn't see) and made mechanical repairs under the bonnet that are still a mystery.
Cost was over $1,000 in NSW + $1200 in Victoria..... on a well maintained car that has never missed a beat before or since.
Would we do it again?.......Nope, we would keep the rego in NSW, and put the extra $$ towards petrol for the kids to drive up every year to re-register and have a holliday.
Thanks David, good idea but they have registered today and I might add after much difficulty as I claimed a concession and as I actually live in Vic and staying in Townsville for the time being it was too hard for them (Transport Dept) to deal with I think. All done and dusted at 4.23pm.
Your idea sounds very easy but keep in mind life wasn't meant to be easy
I have had so many phone calls both ways and even the sales guy came to me to sign something today, just ask JC and GST.
I thought buying a nice shiny new car would be easy peasy, wrooooooooong.
The pint of Guinness at lunch distressed me though

I bought my MH from NSW and had to get it to Vic before the reg ran out, because I had no NSW Licence I could not re reg there. I have a NSW address as that is where my son lives., but it was the licence that mattered. In Vic just had to get a roadworthy and pay stamp duty as it was a change of ownership, they gave me Vic plates and that was it.

Just done this exercise with 11m Bedford bus + 7.5m trailer and Subaru Ute.
You have to make an appointment to change rego, ring the 13 number, just need to take current rego papers for car, plus your Vic address.
Easy peasy cost is way less than Qld.
As for us, they only wanted to see trailer to measure it and total cost worked out, with new plates for 3 vehicles and 12 months rego to be 2/3 cost of the bus for 1 year in Qld.
Hi Doug,
When my son moved to Marybourough, Vic I thought he would need an RWC but NO, all he had to do was present to local Gov Transport Office for inspection of vehicle particulars and all was OK for Vic Rego and address change as his license was already done. That was March this year.
