Hi Paul, when my Avan grows up to an adult (In the very near future I think) I will have a LPG Heater fitted as I have been told they ere quiet and no smell unlike the diesel ones.

we had a truma E2400 installed in our van at build and it is magic.
very quiet operation (inside and out)
heats the van in around 15 min
the control is beside our bed so we can turn it on before getting up to a nice warm van
runs on 12v so we can use it in the bush
max gas use is approx. 100 grams/hr
maintenance free

we would not have a van without one now

 So where is the safety side.  Truma E2400 gas heaters draw combustion air from outside & exhaust it the same way (double pipe, exhaust inner, intake outer.  Heating is achieved by recirculating air inside the van over a heat exchanger.  Diesel heaters to my mind sound like a jet engine (from outside) at startup, stink from outside as does any diesel flame, the incessant ticking of the fuel pump is annoying inside & I see no logic to fitting an additional fuel tank to the van.  Any van is going to need gas refills at times, regardless.

No!  Maximum size is 9Kg
Regulation vary a little in each state, but all states allow 2 X 9Kg if secured and positioned in accordance with AS 5601.
VIC and QLD for instance allow that as the maximum that can be carried on or within an RV.  i.e. no other cylinders of any size for BBQ's, lanterns etc can be carried in or on the RV.
If you sates allows extra cylinders to be carried then you may need to leave them at home when travelling interstate depending on that States regulations.
Many (Self included) carry a small 1.5Kg cylinder for a BBQ hotplate. To stay legal I carry mine secured in the rear tub of the ute.

Our Truma is supposed to use a max of 100 grams/hr. It does not run all that often once the van is warm.

I would be very surprised if it ran for a max of 3-4 hours per day

that is not much LPG per day.

I fitted an Eberspacher diesel heater to our previous 21' van and found it very good. I put the small diesel tank in a tool box on the van 'A' frame so was easy to fill whilst filling the car.

The main reason I fitted the diesel heater was that I could do it myself, which I found quite easy and kept the initial cost way down.

The only smell we got was outside and only for seconds at start up, absolutely none inside the van.

As far as the pump ticking sound, if you can hear that inside the van it is due to poor installation. There are several ways around it and all are at a cost of few dollars or a good quality heater will have the parts in the kit to prevent the noise being transferred along the chassis.

As for noise from the heater itself inside the van, I can't hear any difference between the gas or diesel they both have muti stage fans that move the warm air out of the heater. If you can't hear that, you're about to get cold.

Both have easy to operate controls that are mounted within reach of the "boss" whoever SHE maybe.

To save quite a lot of money I bought ours from the UK from a very large dealer/supplier and found them excellant to deal with particularly on the technical side of things. They delivered it to my home within a week of me placing the order, I almost did the same again but the dealer who sold me our new van did a great package deal for a Truma gas heater so I didn't even get my tools out this time.

We have the  Eberspacher Diesel heater in the  Avan Cruiseliner.    Great bit of kit.  

The start up fan noise is there,  but this soon modulated to normal low running  and becomes not really  noticed.    The fuel pump tick  even in the size of the Avan is not actually all that bad.  I  have not got around to minimising the transmission of the pump  tick yet as I realy have not found it to be that bad.

But I will remount it with some anti vibration material eventually. 

I have not experienced the Gas Version of these heaters so can't comment on them.

Hi all ..

I've had both .. In the Motorhome I had a diesel heater that worked fine .. After 4 years I changed my setup to a Tug and Caravan ..

The new Caravan I had fitted with a Truma Gas Heater ..

I find that the Truma is far more efficient than the diesel heater although the diesel heater would be more economical if you ran them for the same time ..

The efficiency of the Gas Heater does not require me to run it consistently .. It also runs much quieter internally and externally .. External noise and the smell of diesel fumes was often quite evident as

friends around me advised ..

I'm happy with my choice and would suggest it as a consideration ..
