PARKING BAYS - Again

I've read the past threads on this subject, but I have been prompted to raise it again.

A truck driver spoke to me about caravans in truck parking bays.  One of the issues is, trucks can't park in caravan free camps.  There are a couple reasons, such as not enough room for big trucks, accessibility to difficult driveways, and lastly, they sometimes have toilets.

Some states provide great overnight areas for trucks with toilets, bbq's, rubbish bins and shade, but generally these conveniences are not the norm.

We know campers don't want to park near trucks because of noise caused by ice pack airconditioners, fridge vans, noisy stock, and some of the good times truckies (and pilots) enjoy at the end of a long day on the road.

Truck driver rest breaks are determined by fatigue management laws.  Oversize loads can only travel between sun up and sun down, when we have to find a SAFE, suitable place to park one or more large trucks and loads, accompanied by several pilot vehicle drivers.

The early start could disturb your peaceful sleep, and we wouldn't want to do that.

So I ask we all work together and spread the word.  Share the road but not the parking bays.

Safe and happy travels.

wholeheartedly agree CG

NON heavy vehicles who park in truck bays should be fined.

I will not park there for the reasons you have given above. There are plenty of places for light vehicles to park without getting in the way of our truckies.

No issues from me and always respect the truckies, they have a job to do and governed by OH&S requirements.

If a parking bay is signposted that it is for trucks only then I agree that campers and others should not use them. If it was made with the intention and legal right for all road users to use then I see no problem with all using it.

The problem is that different states have different signage and often it is not clear which  rule the parking space comes under.

I think anyone parking in a parking bay would expect that to happen

<<So I ask we all work together and spread the word.  Share the road but not the parking bays.>>

You are speaking from the truckies point of view which is understandable and  to be expected but there are always two sides and I speak from non- truckie road users ( my own )  point of view.

Let me start off by saying I agree 100% and if I do park our bus in a rest area I am always carefull to park in a corner or somewhere out of the way of other users..

It's a pity some truckies aren't the same they will park in the middle of the road in "Rest Areas" for their rest breaks and stuff anyone else.

Have often wondered, Is it acceptable for some caravanners to blast their air horns or similar as they pass heavy vehicle rest areas?

As SOME truckies do at "caravan" rest areas. Very obvious that most yes most truckies detest caravans & I can understand why but at the end of the day we all share the same road.

I made the mistake a few years ago of stopping in a shared rest area, there was more than enough room for at least 10 times the vehicles using the area. Myself and two other vans in an out of way section really got to see just how good some of the spotties and air horns were on a couple of the trucks.

My tuppence worth.

Mike.

I think people forget that truckies are there to earn a living, and not having a holiday.

Their working conditions are difficult from lots of aspects, and I for one would like the roads -and rest areas- to be safe for them and for us.

Just let them do their jobs, and that includes adequate rest breaks in designated areas.

I agree wholeheartedly with that.

There are other road users who also need consideration and I maintain that if a rest area is supposed to be shared with all types of vehicles then so be it, it has to be shared. If one particular group wishes to have exclusive use of the area then that group should make representations to the governing bodies to have the rules changed.

All drivers need adequate rest

Hey Granny Chris, a couple of weeks ago we pulled into a caravan free park, early afternoon, as the day went on a truckie with stock truck and trailer (empty) came in and parked as did several other vans. That was all good none of us complained. Come about 4 oclock ish my old boy 2 took our little Jack Russell on a lead for a walk.As he walked passed the truck the driver was having a beer, his bull terrier came out from under the truck and started attacking our dog. The bully was unrestrained. Rob managed to get our dog and said to driver, why don't you put you dog on a lead mate? The truckie said F,,,k off before I f,,ken snot ya. I know not all truckies are not like that but th at was a pretty scary incident. I wanted to go into town and report but Rob saId let It be.
