Towing with a Kia Sorrento petrol 3.8 litre 4WD

We have just bought a Ranger Panorama 19ft and plan to tow it with our Kia Sorrento 3.8 petrol 4WD and wonder if anyone else has towed with this model and what to expect from fuel consumption any help would be appreciated

We towed our 2.8T caravan around 25000km with our sorento 3.5 L v6 and had no issue whatsoever.

Our last trip was 12500 km and the Kia averaged 18.5 l/100km for the trip through NT and FNQ.

Worst was 26 l/100km on a hilly stretch and lowest was 12 l/100km with a slight tail wind.

The kia did it easily, no overheating worries and used very little oil.

hope that helps

Hi Frank
Thank you for your help it has certainly put our minds at rest the Ranger Panorama we bought is a 1.850 and fully laden is 2.150 when we don't tow the car does 400'ks to 76 litres, so it was interesting to know what to expect. It's also good to know that it is able to tow that weight which was another concern of ours thanks once again

Bin95, we have a Ranger Panorama 21'6. Initially we towed this with a Mitsubishi Pajero, 3.2 diesel. Up and down the east coast all was fine at 18ltr/100.
Going across the Nullabor, fuel consumption went up to 29ltr/100. Traded the old girl for a 200 series Landcruiser 4.5 V8. No matter where we go, 17ltr/100 is the average and down to 11ltr/100 not towing on the highway. We tow at 90 - 95 kph.
Whilst this is not about a Kia, I just wanted to give you some real life experience.

 Hi Frank,

I hope you mean your 3.8 lit V6 as stated in the thread title, not 3.5 as stated above.

The 3.5 lit 145kw Sorento's are limited to 2300kg towing, but the 3.8 lit 196kw, 3.3 lit 180kw and 2.5 lit 125kw diesel are rated for 2800kg.

Regards, Brian

G'day Brian,

Mate you could be right there. I will have to go and have a look when I am over at the young blokes place.

It was definitely 2800 kg towing capacity so it is possible I have the engine size wrong.

will check and get back to you.

Hi Frank

Just realise after reading the replies that I entered 3.8 litre and it is a 3.5 litre, the van weighs 1840 unloaded and maximum would be 2100 fully loaded according to the manual it will tow up to 2300 if yours is a 3.5 that is good.

Brian you are on the money

ours was a 3.8 litre. I believe it is a Mitsubishi engine or a copy of one.

think the later models went to 3.5 or was it 3.3 ? at the time the diesel engines first came out in a sorento from memory that was late 2007 or 2008.

thanks for picking me up on that one.

Bin95 I apologise if my mistake has mislead you.

I'm currently at Tin Can Bay - just by sheer coincidence, this afternoon a Sorento with an Adria pulled in and they setup on the site beside me. Naturally, I started a conversation and asked him about his Sorento - his Sorento is an 08 diesel with a 2.8 tonne rating - the Adria is one of the large Adoras and is about 1800kg ATM - he reckons the unit tows very well, especially as the van is well under the Sorentos capacity - has towed it extensively, and is currently working his way up the east coast from Newcastle and then across to Darwin. He told me he averages about 15 lit/100km with the van, and around 9 lit/100km in city/suburban without the van. That's not an unreasonable consumption.

Just as a comparison, yesterday I towed the Aliner ( 950kg as I've loaded it - no water, no gas) from Brisbane to Tin Can Bay and averaged 11.1 km /100km - I'm pretty pleased with that, considering a Cerato (1200kg ATM) is not normally known as a tow car.

Regards, Brian

Just a quick potted history on Sorentos (as I'm looking around for a good used one as a potential future buy)

BL series 4WD wagon with ladder chassis

2003 to early 2007 - 3.5lit V6 145kw - 2300kg ATM, 230kg ball

In early 2007 changed to 3.8lit V6 196kw - 2800kg ATM, 280kg ball

Only lasted about a year when KIA dropped to a 3.3 lit V6 180kw - 2800kg ATM, 280 ball

Simultaneously with the 3.8 and 3.3 era KIA added  a 2.5lit 125kw turbo diesel - still 2800kg ATM and 280kg ball

Current series 4WD SUV with mono chassis introduced mid 2009 - KIA dropped the ball here, badly - choice of 3.5lit V6 (different from the early ones) and 2.5lit diesel, BUT capacity really reduced, down to 2000kg for auto or 2500kg for manual, but only at 120kg ball !!! You can buy a heavy duty tow kit which includes uprated rear suspension, but that only takes it up from 120kg ball to 150kg ball - still far too low to be of any use for serious vans (apart from the lightweight euro vans). The other main detractor for the current series (as far as I'm concerned) is it is a 7 seater - I don't want to pay excess cost for two extra seats that will never be used (I've only carried 2 extra persons in the back of a 5 seater on maybe six occasions over the last 15 years or so).

Anyway, I'm keeping my eyes open for a good used 3.8 or 3.3 Sorento, or maybe a diesel, if I can get myself enthused about diesel.

many thanks Shortnorth.

I sort of had a felling it was a 3.8. I do remember it handled our van no problem at all provided you left the gear lever in "D"

I did find that if towing and using the manual mode it would switch the manual mode off after a while and go back to auto so I only ever used it for short periods when descending hills etc.

I agree they dropped the ball when they eliminated the chassis. The Kia was becoming a very popular tow vehicle especially the diesel.

We sold ours to our son to tow his camper trailer and he is stoked with it.

good luck with your hunt for a Kia.

Thank you to all that replied we have found our Panorama tows well on the flat but is struggling up hills so thinking we will have to get a diesel, we will be looking at fuel economy as well as towing capabilities, we may not consider another KIA as we have heard the parts are very expensives any suggestions?
