Camera help needed Pls

Hi  ..

I have a much loved Sony Compact Zoom DSC - HX9V.

Unfortunately the covering over the LCD screen is damaged making it difficult to see in bright sunlight.

Mr.Google has lots of stuff suggesting the this is not uncommon with Sony cameras .. usually just out of warranty like mine.

It seems that the screen had a sticky film over it that becomes damaged or starts lifting off.

There are replacement glass/film for some of the other models for <$20 but not mine & Sony want $160 to repair.  None of the camera repairers(?) that I contacted were interested.

Has anyone had any experience with this problem?

Can you identify your part in the following exploded views?

The Level 2 & 3 Service Manuals are here:

elektrotanya.com/sony_dsc-hx9_level_2_sm.pdf/download.html
elektrotanya.com/sony_dsc-hx9_level_3-sm.pdf/download.html

The manual should have a parts list with the same exploded views. You could then search for the relevant part number on the Internet, or I could get price and availability information from Prime Electronics for you.

I suspect that the LCD is only available as an assembly. In any case, you might need to remove the rear cabinet in order to apply the replacement film.

Is this the sort of thing you are talking about?

Google also turns up "Scratchgard" and "ScreenGuard".

 Thanks once again ..

I have been looking at a few Utube clips showing a guy replacing the outer layer film with a Fotga Pro Optical Glass cover on another model that seems to have the same problem as mine.

Just found another Utube clip replacing the whole screen on my model, but it is in another language (Spanish I think).

I would rather try the outer layer film replacement approach before I start with replacing the whole screen assembly though, but it looks like they're out of stock for mine.

My security won't let me download the service manuals & I am almost out of my 5gig of broadband usage this month (wife has been playing with her new iPad on 'my' WiFi & the grand kids have been visiting with their iThings too), so I'll have to postpone my investigations for a few more weeks ...  but will continue to record promising web sites, the ones that you provided in particular.

If it is "just" out of warranty then it has probably not provided a reasonable reliability, therefore covered under consumer law.
