A Ghost Town in N.Z.

Here's a true story that happened to the Wife and I some years back while living in Nelson New Zealand.

One weekend we decided to take a drive through the Golden Bay area, which is at the top of the South Island.

It was getting near lunch time and as we were getting a bit peckish, we decided to look for a country Store where we could get a bite to eat.

We were well out in the Country on a sealed road, so we followed this road thinking, it must lead somewhere,

We came around a corner and came upon this small town, straight away the hairs on the back of the neck started to bristle, I had a very uneasy feeling about this place, it just didn't look right.

There was no cars to be seen anywhere, in fact we hadn't seen any cars since we left the highway and started on this road,

Driving into this town was like going back 100 years in time, the shop fronts all had board walks in front of them and all were very old and un-painted.

There were people standing, just staring at us, no one smiled and no one talked, they were all dressed in very old fashioned  clothing and I do recall most of the men looked very much like the Quakers, with the beards and the flat black wide brim hats.

The wife said, lets not stop here, things don't feel right, So I stuck the foot down and kept going until we were back on the main road.

Now here's the un-explained part,  Several Months went by and one day we were talking about this town and decided to go and find it, Well, we spent an entire day looking for the Town, we travelled every road in the whole district, but we never came across the place again.

A couple of years ago we were talking to a couple from N.Z. while doing our trip around Aussie, I happened to mention this town and funny enough the Bloke said that they had travelled through the Golden Bay area them selves before coming to Aussie. and they had found  the same  Town, plus they had the same bad feeling we had and like us they could not find it again later.

Now this might be a strange story to swallow but, It's dead true.

I wonder if there any other Kiwi's on this forum who may have come across this town.  ??

Did you hear Banjos?
Seriously though, have you tried to find the place using something like Google Maps? starting from where you think you might have been and in "satellite view" zoom in and search around. Was the town up in the hills, or was it in the open plain area?

It's an intriguing story though.

Edit: It wasn't the Rainbow Valley Commune was it? situated here [ -40.890742,172.724991 ]  just cut and paste those coordinates into Google Maps and select satellite view.
