Hello Robin,

There is a 12 Volt supply you can buy which is quite easy to change from the 240 Volt one. Drawback it will void any warranty

They also sell the main VAST decoders both the 12 and the 240 Volt ones, and one that has both. Some with hard drives. The Humax version even has twin tuners, watch one recording and record two other shows.

My own thinking is that some have an inbuilt hard drive but an external one gives you the opportunity to get other stuff from friend etc. if you can take the hard drive away and download stuff from a computer.

There are other suppliers and I am sure you will get other replies telling you about people they have dealt with.

I have just done the same as you and upgraded my UEC Vast receiver for the 12 Volt version, but i didn't want the option of the recorder version, but i think the standard version does have the usb facility to play back from a memory stick.

One thing i would be watching is the current drain when on battery. Hard drives take a fair bit of power to run and could increase your battery drain quiet a fair amount, that and the television also on at the same time and you would be looking at about 8 amps all up,98 Watts, Plus you also have all of the other things that are used in the van at the same time eg: lighting.

I have just checked the little 240 Volt to 12 Volt power supply and that little power supply has a max of 3 Amps @ 12 Volts, so probably my satillight receiver is drawing about 2 Amps, even so this equates to 24 Watts, and the you have your television and most of the one that i have worked on had a external power supply and had a max current of about 5 Amps @ 12 Volts. unshure of what the current draw would be on stand-by, but as a guess 1 amp would be pritty close, for both the television and satillight receiver.

So by all means upgrade to the 12 Volt version, but be aware of the current consumed by all of these 12 Volt appliances.

Have a good look at the Satking box, it is 12v and it is a very user friendly box. Available at the usual good suppliers, Satplus etc.

How do you install the 12v power supply in the 240v box. I would love a 12v sat box,but they are $250. any body want a swap with cash for a 240v for a 12v?

Ring Satplus and credit them with about $100 plus freight & they will send you a 12v conversion PC board. (this is for the UEC box anyway). It is a simple matter to unscrew the cover, undo a couple screws to remove the 240v card & insert the 12v one.

Instructions will come with it. Literally a 10 minute job.

as you are in Perth have a look at accessantennas in Osbourne park, very good service and I have also had good service from satplus in Vic.

DO NOT go anywhere near itechworld.
